“Ohh, he is back? Now it makes sense.”

“Really?” I asked. “Because it didn’t make sense to me.”

Valerio chuckled. “It will in time.”

I rolled my eyes, and Valerio angled his head to kiss me, but before he could, I remembered the name I had seen on his phone earlier. “Were you talking to Tommaso?”

“Yeah,” he answered simply.

“My brother Tommaso?”

“Yes.”

“Why? I didn’t know you guys became best friends.”

He laughed at that. “We didn’t. We are just policing each other a bit.”

I looked at him with furrowed brows. What the fuck that even mean?

“We are making sure if we are keeping our promises. He calls me to ask about you and threatens me to not hurt you. In return, I ask him about the situation in L.A. and Elsie. She is staying over there a lot. I think she likes it.”

She did like it there. I talked to her almost every day. Now

sometimes Sofia facetimed me so I could see Elsie. I was happy about the situation. I was also happy that Valerio was doing his best for Elsie, but his talking to Tommaso was also concerning.

My last meeting with my brother went well. I was glad that he still called Valerio to ask about me, but I was not ready to trust him fully. I didn’t trust him to tell Valerio secrets just to get into his good graces. More specifically, my secrets.

I was going to tell him one day, but I was not ready yet. I just wanted to have this for a little longer without worrying about how he was going to look at me.

However, I knew I had to tell him before Tommaso or anybody else did.

Chapter 30

Luciana

I entered the home, trying to contain my happiness. Looking joyful was really not in line with my brand. Also, I could hear Valerio in the apartment. I didn’t want him to see me smiling.

He would make fun of me.

However, despite being able to hold a grumpy face, I was happy. I had never been good at making friends. It was never a skill of mine. I still couldn’t manage to befriend Verona and Bianca, but as of today, I was not an absolute outcast. I just had a study session with a few people I was taking a class with. They invited me, and we even talked some.

It was the first time I went out with friends that were not related to me. It made me stupidly happy, but I was not letting Valerio know that. This was a very normal thing for him and for most people too. I didn’t want to look stupid by being too excited about it.

So I kept my grumpy expression as I entered the living room where his voice was coming from, but the sight in front of me made my lips twitch. Valerio was playing with Sherbet as Wednesday watched them like a disapproving parent. The little kitten was attacking Valerio’s arms ruthlessly, and Valerio was edging her on with his words and movements. He played with them roughly, unlike me, and Sherbet loved it. I was pretty sure she loved him more than me.

Traitor.

At least Wednesday still seemed like she was on my side. Of course, I had to disregard her sleeping on Valerio’s chest whenever he laid down on the living room couch. She found him a little too much but still couldn’t stay away from him.

Maybe she was more like me than I thought.

I watched Valerio pinning the cat down to scratch her belly as they fought, and Sherbet looked around with a silly, cute expression. It was so hard not to smile at the sight of her honestly.

“Don’t you have a size advantage?” I asked from the door instead of spying on their cute moment and fighting my smile.

Valerio turned to me with a grin. His hands kept moving, playing with the kitten. “I do, but she bites, so we are equal.”

I folded my arms under my breasts. “Doesn’t sound so convincing to me.”
