The young mafioso glanced toward his boss’ treacherous smile and ran back inside the elevator.

“Now what?” asked Loir, massaging his shoulders. “I hope you brought back some fun for me!”

“I did, but I have some questions first,” said Eden, crossing her arms. “You didn’t happen to work for the Dog, did you?”

Loir froze in the middle of his stretching movement and his pale face got even whiter under all the ink.

“I d-don’t know who you’re t-t-talking about...”

“Are you sure?” said Dante with a smile. “I could call Tanya right now and ask her. Tanya Raha, the Dog. Sure you’re not familiar?”

Loir shrunk in his chair and turned to Eden with a very uncomfortable expression. This time, he looked really upset, his hands on his knees and almost trying to hide himself behind them.

“I may have... worked with her... a bit...” he whimpered.

“So you’re the hacker she supposedly lost?” said Eden.

“Perhaps...? I mean, I may have fled after she threatened to freeze my toes and make rolled sausages with them...”

“She said you were captured.”

“Please don’t tell her I’m alive,” begged Loir. “Do you know she puts you in a freezer and makes you into ice cubes for her gin if you make her unhappy?!”

Eden sighed. She didn’t really care if Tanya’s threats were real or fake, but Loir genuinely looked scared.

“I promise I won’t; however, she said you can contact the Edge. When I mentioned them, you always said you couldn’t, so which one is it?”

Loir grimaced.

“I might be fine with her making sausages out of my toes after all...”

“Loir, answer me.”

“I don’t want to contact the Edge!” he grumbled. “They are even naggier than you are. They probably still hate me since last time; they won’t talk to me after they kicked me out...”

“Wait... You don’t just know them, but you were actually part of the Edge?” Eden gasped.

Loir shrugged and scratched his inked head with his black nails.

“Yes, yes... I was.”

“How? For how long? Who are they?”

The hacker grimaced.

“That’s a lot of questions, Kitty...”

“Answer her.”

Loir glanced at Dante, surprised by his authoritative tone. With a frown, he slowly grabbed the huge cup on his desk and took a loud and long slurp with the metallic straw before he put it down.

“You two are so pushy... It’s really not that interesting… Hm… I was kicked out about two years ago, I think?”

“Two years ago?” gasped Eden, getting excited. “So you know about the attack on the Miami Core?”

She couldn’t believe she was talking to someone who had once been part of the Edge and committed one of the most rebellious acts ever against the Cores. Moreover, he had been right there, acting like a lunatic all this time and working as her partner! Eden had always known Loir was a brilliant hacker, way better than most, but with all of his paranoia and insanity, never would she have suspected this crazy guy in his basement was ever part of the most significant hacktivist organization in the world!

“Oh, that one and many others: we hacked Miami twice, and New York,” he counted on his fingers, “Houston, Atlanta, Charleston, Charlotte... all the Cores that were bigger than a hotdog stand, we tried to bugger them!”
