Where this leaves us, I’m not sure, but there is one thing I am certain of.

Now that I have her, I will never let her go.

CHAPTER8

JESSA

As Jack opens the door to leave, one of the men who rode back with us enters the room, and Jack introduces him to me as “Grizz.” I’m going to assume this is his code name, and it’s fitting. He appears to be the most muscular of the group, and he stands a fraction taller than everyone else I’ve seen.

Grizz nods when he’s introduced, then he addresses Jack. “I’m moving her in with her friend. Jekyll’s orders. He’ll question her in the morning.” Then he glances at my state of undress. I pull the covers up to my neck, and he snaps his eyes back in awkward silence.

“Give her two minutes to get dressed.” The Jack from moments ago is tucked away. His guard is firmly back in place.

What did we just do?

I forgot myself and our situation, and now I’m sitting here naked on a cot, watching him turn and leave the room with no further glance in my direction.

Once Grizz follows him out, shutting the door behind him to allow me some privacy, I slide out from under the warmth and safety of the covers to gather my things.

Then it catches my eye.

Like a moth to a digital flame, my attention instantly homes in on the table.

Jack forgot his phone.

I’m in the room alone, with a phone that no doubt has access to the internet, maybe more, and if I dig, I can probably access their servers from that one little device.

This is our ticket out.

Our freedom is lying on the table next to me, and my palms twitch at the thought of what I’m about to do.

I need to be smart about this.

I have two options.

I can give the phone back as a sign of good faith. That might go a long way in my interrogation with Logan.

Or I can keep it and use it to secure our freedom. But what kind of freedom is it if Dana and I are still trapped with Zane under Maxwell’s demands?

Before I decide to run, I need to know if staying here is better for our final plan. If Jack and Logan want the same things, it might be better to hang around.

The bolt to my cell door clicks then slides unlocked, and I make the quick decision to keep the phone for now. I can give it back later, but I need more time to think about this.

Moving swiftly across the room, I grab the towel off the floor and toss it onto the table, concealing the phone as the door swings open and Grizz reenters the room.

Sliding my hand under the towel, I palm the phone and turn to the burly man standing in the entrance.

“I had a shower earlier. Where should I put the towel?” I pick up the towel and hold it out to him.

“Just leave it. Follow me.” Then he turns his back to me and leaves the room.

I follow him out, dropping the towel onto the floor and sliding the phone into my back pocket.

Less than a minute later, another door groans on its hinges. As I enter, Dana stands from her chair and rushes to me.

As soon as Grizz closes the door, I’m met with a big hug. She hasn’t hugged me like this in a while. We haven’t been apart in a long time, and she’s never been interrogated.

“Hey. I was wondering where they put you. You okay?” Her eyes are light with relief.
