Then, just as I was about to tell her how I’ll do anything to make up for ten years without her, she passed out in my arms.

As I chuckle under my breath, my phone vibrates beside me on the bed. I’m thankful I remembered to take it out of my pocket before I sat in the shower. Link would be pissed if I broke another phone.

Logan

We need to talk. I’m in my office.

His text doesn’t offer much, but I know that’s his way of making sure I show up.

Logan knows if he gives me too much information, I’d probably just crawl in beside Jessa and fall asleep with her.

Pulling the covers up to her chin, I lean over and ghost my lips over her forehead in a kiss that doesn’t wake her.

Then I move into the silent halls toward our offices, with a quick pit stop into my own for a dry change of clothes.

By the time I open the door to Logan’s office, the whole day has slipped into night, and everyone is already asleep—well, everyone except for Logan and Link, who is on speaker.

“So it’s just Tex and Eagle then?” Logan rolls his eyes in my direction as I enter. Then he continues, “This is moving way too slow for me, Link. Jack is here now.” He motions toward the chair in front of his desk, and I pull it out to sit and listen to the rest of the conversation.

“Hi, Jack. Sorry, Logan. Those are the only two I have been able to clear definitively. We’re working around the clock trying to figure this out.”

“And what about Maxwell’s communication? Can you give us anything on that? A location? Anything?” I know Logan too well. He is frustrated that we aren’t ahead of the situation right now.

“Oh, um…” Link shuffles papers on the other end of the line.

His pause isn’t from lack of information, although I’m pretty sure he has none. He’s uncomfortable.

We’re all uncomfortable. Everyone near a screen saw Jessa’s hell.

Logan’s patience wears thin. “Link, we all saw the video. Set that aside. Was there anything useful?” His tone is controlled and focused, but his jaw is clenched tight.

The video has rattled him too.

“We don’t have a location. I’m sorry. His team knew exactly how long to stay connected. We bounced around the whole time, trying to find a destination, and we almost had him.”

A piece of our conversation from earlier comes back to me. “The alarm,” I offer.

Logan shakes his head, momentarily confused. “What alarm?”

“Maxwell had an alarm that went off when he was talking to us. That must have been his warning to end the call.”

“That would probably be it,” Link confirms. “As for the old video of, uh…” Link goes silent for a short second. “Jack, I’m so sorry.”

As I look up to answer Link, I catch Logan watching me.

He’s not analyzing though.

His expression is pained. He’s sympathizing.

“I know, Link. We all are.” I’m comforted to know the guys surrounding me are the best I could ever ask for—all except for one.

Getting back to the issue at hand, Link continues, “I have one team member working on the footage of Jessa’s time outside. We’re trying to pull anything out of the background that will give us a location. There’s nothing helpful inside since there were no windows. I’ll let you know what I find out.”

“Thanks, Link. I need to let you go. Call me if you find anything else.” Logan’s words catch me off guard, and I’m sure Link is equally thrown. For the first five years of knowing Logan, I was convinced he never learned proper phone etiquette, because he’s only ever ended our communications by hanging up.

This is new.

Before I delve further into his new, courteous direction, I remember the shower.
