There was no other way for Jessa, and he saved me from having to be the one who took her there. She needed me to be the one who saved her.

I would never have been able to bring myself to do what Logan did, and he’ll carry his own guilt for a long time.

Watching me take a seat, Logan slowly lowers back into his own.

“We good?” I point to the black eye I left him with last night. It’s all I’ll offer him.

“We’re good,” he answers as he reaches across his desk for a pen. He writes something down before discarding it onto his desk and leaning back. “And Jessa? Is she—good?”

I know he’s testing the water for sharks.

“She struggled last night. We got through it.” I’m careful with my words. Our friendship is still here. It’s still strong. We just need to ease back into everything.

“Look, Jack—”

“Save it. I’ve had some time to think. About a lot of things. It was your only option. I spoke to her about it this morning. She understands as much as she’s going to.” Logan’s eyes widen at my words. I know he was expecting me to come in here with guns blazing, and he’s surprised by my reaction.

“And her memory? Does she remember?” He’s slipping back into business mode, and I couldn’t be happier to move past this for now.

“She remembers her fear, and she remembers what happened until the end of the video. She said pieces are slowly coming back to her. She doesn’t remember anything she needs yet. We talked this morning, and I just left her with Dana. She’s asked that Dana not find out what happened last night. It stays between us. I think, for your own personal safety wherethat oneis concerned, you’ll agree.”

Logan chuckles, and our tension eases as he updates me.

“I think it’s for the best that we keep all of it between us. We still don’t have our mole narrowed down. Link called this morning. He hasn’t been able to completely clear anyone else yet. In our core group, only Grey, Eagle, and Tex are clean.” He pauses, then looks at me, back in tactical mode. “Has she mentioned if anyone has spoken to her yet?”

“I haven’t asked. I was focused on the video and—last night.”

“Fair enough. We should find out. Some of our team are heading off base on their mission, and I want to make sure, whoever the mole is, that he stays close to us until we can deal with him. This leaves Grizz, Waldo, and Hunter. Grey has the least experience leading a team, so I’m holding him back. Tex and Eagle can each take a group. We’ll update them with the real reason they are heading out to Arizona. Until we clear more, everyone else stays in the dark.”

“I agree, then we—”

A shuffle in the hall stops my train of thought, and both of us turn our attention to the closed door.

“Come in,” Logan hollers, and the commotion outside stops.

The door opens to reveal Jessa’s wide eyes as she steps into the room, with Hunter trailing behind her.

“Jessa?” Logan’s voice is regretful, and I know instantly he wishes he could take everything back.

“Yeah, hi. Um…” She gathers her thoughts along with a deep breath, which makes me notice I haven’t taken a breath of my own since the door opened. “I want to speak with you, Logan. Your guy…” She motions to Hunter, who is standing by the door, looking nervous. “Uh, he said you were busy, but I’d like to talk to you.”

“Sure, come in. It’s okay, Hunter. We’ve got it from here.” Logan and I stand, and I move to grab a second chair as Hunter takes a step back toward the door.

“Um.” She’s frozen in place as she smiles at me warmly. “I mean alone, Jack. I’d like to speak with Logan alone.”

“Oh.” I don’t recover well enough to hide my shock, and now both sets of eyes are on me as I nod with a smile, then excuse myself and follow Hunter out. “I’ll wait outside. We still need to discuss the team’s departure.”

“I won’t be long. Thank you, Jack.” Logan offers me a warm smile, as if trying to say he has no intentions of a repeat of last night, and I agree with a curt nod in return.

I reach out and graze Jessa’s hand as I pass her.

When I reach the door, I turn to see Jessa taking my seat in front of Logan. Then I leave and exhale yet another breath I’d been holding.

CHAPTER32

JESSA

“You okay?” Dana’s words pull me out of my daze.
