“Well, you told me last year I was going to have come up with something even more impressive to celebrate your birthday this year,” he explains. “I figured you’d be suspicious if I did it on your actual birthday, so I moved it forward a week.”

My heart swells with love for this man. I can’t believe he remembers that little exchange we had so long ago. “I love it,” I tell him with a grin. “Although, I’m not sure how the rules work here. You might have to do something amazing again next week.”

I’m only teasing, but Tom nods in agreement, as though taking my words to heart. “I’ve thought of that. Think of today as part one of your birthday extravaganza, and then next week will be part two.”

A mix of curiosity and anticipation courses through me. “Oh, I love a good extravaganza! Do I have to wait until next week to find out what part two is?”

“Not necessarily.” He reaches out to take my hand, gently sliding his thumb over my knuckles in a way that makes me shiver. “I’m hoping part two will be ring shopping.”

My brain seems to fizzle out at the words and I’m left there just staring at Tom in utter shock. “Ring…shopping?”

His lips quirk in a nervous smile, but the gaze he fixes me with is full of intensity. “I’ve known for a long time that I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Archie. I want to wake up with you every morning and go to bed with you every night. You’re the love of my life, and I want everyone to know it. But I know you’re still young, so if you want to wait—"

“I don’t want to wait!” I cry. I leap up from my chair, knocking my nearly-full glass of wine over and staining the snow white table cloth red. I barely even notice, however, because Tom has just proposed to me and all I can think about is jumping into his arms and kissing his fucking face off. “Yes, yes, yes. Definitely,” I say in between ridiculously messy kisses.

“Okay, I’m going to take that as a yes,” is his wry response.

Bloody hell, I really am living the dream.

The End.
