“Ryan and Sylvia can’t see me here, Lucan. Are they awake yet? Oh shit!”

“Relax, baby.” I rub her back. “It’s still slightly dark out.”

She turns to look at me. “Lucan, please let me leave. I really don’t want Ryan and Sylvia to know about this.”

I am tempted to tell her I don’t care. But then I realize that while I have no problem broadcasting our relationship to the world, she needs discretion. It shifts something in my emotions and cements her in my esteem even more.

“Okay.”

In record time, I pull on sweats and a T-shirt while she gets dressed. I hurry her out to the garage while the house still sleeps. The only person who sees and knows anything is the night guard at the gate. When we pull into the club parking lot, it is almost empty and only a few patrons still linger.

“I’m going to follow you home.”

“I’ll be fine, Lucan.”

“It wasn’t a question, Summer.” I stroke her cheek gently. “I’m following you home. I’d like to take you to breakfast so we can talk a little, okay?”

She looks at me long and hard before nodding. “Okay.”

I lean across and give her a soft kiss before following her to her car. When we get to her house, the sun is just starting to come up. While she changes, I look at her bookshelf. I turn as she comes out clad in jeans and a T-shirt with a purse slung over her shoulder. She looks at me warily as I approach. I tilt her head back to look into her eyes and smile.

“I’d love nothing more than to have breakfast here. But I suspect not much eating will get done. Correction – not much eating offoodwill get done.” I laugh as her cheeks go red, then lean down and kiss her.

“Let’s go before I forget the bullshit reason for not eating breakfast here.”

I take her to one of my favorite little delis that I sometimes pop into for a cup of coffee on my way home from a long night at work. We find a corner table and have hot mugs of coffee in front of us in no time. When the waitress leaves us to hand our breakfast orders to the kitchen, I reach across the table and intertwine my fingers with Summer’s.

“Are you okay?”

“I am. Are you?”

“I’m more than okay. I’m here with you for breakfast after we spent a spectacular night together.”

She lowers her eyes and smiles. “Thanks for getting me out of an embarrassing situation.”

“Are you embarrassed to be with me?” I frown as my heart thuds.

She shakes her head emphatically. “Definitely not. It’s just that it would have been awkward explaining my presence there on my weekend off, don’t you think? The last thing I want is for Ryan to find me in his daddy’s bed.”

I take a deep breath. “Uncle. His uncle’s bed.” I watch her face for a reaction.

Her eyes go wide. “Excuse me?”

I let out the breath I have been holding. “I’m Ryan’s uncle. He’s my brother Vincent’s child. Vincent and his wife Stacey were killed in a car crash a few years ago. As his only relative living in the country, I got custody of him. He was about two when he and Sylvia came to live with me.”

She stares at me with her mouth dropped. “Did you say uncle?”

“Yes.”

“Wow. I’m sorry about your brother.”

“So am I. Every day when I look at Ryan, I see Vincent. He took after our mother with dark hair and green eyes while I got my father’s looks.”

“You’ve adopted him, right? So technically, youarehis father.”

“Technically.”

“Why are you telling me this?” she looks down and stirs her coffee.
