“So, the first thing we’ve got to do is move you out. Then we do some cosmetic renovation and get it into the market. As a rental or purchase, I don’t seeing it sticking around for long.”

Lola is true to her word. By the end of October, the house goes on the market and within two weeks there is an offer.

By Christmas, my stomach is starting to show and we break the news to Ryan that he will have a little brother or sister.

“I’d like a little sister, please.”

I smile indulgently as I look down at him nestling his head on my stomach.

“It doesn’t quite work like that, sweetie. He or she is already there.”

“Well, I’ll be happy with whichever, then, I suppose.” Then he whispers to me, “But I still want a little sister.”

“I’ll see what I can do. Even if it means that Summer and I have to keep trying until we get one.” Lucan nods and smirks.

I look up as Sylvia hides her laughter behind a cough.

“Don’t encourage him,” I say in a stage whisper and she doubles over snickering.

Later that night in bed, Lucan rubs oil on my belly.

“I love seeing my child growing inside you. I can’t wait to feel the first kick, and see the first imprint of those little feet. I can’t wait to hold your hand as you bring our son or daughter into this world. I love you so much, Summer. And I love our child. Thank you for giving me this chance to love you both. Thank you for loving me.”

He presses his face to my stomach and I feel the warmth of his tears as they flow. We lie there for a long time in silence. I am lost in thought as I stroke his hair.

So much has transpired since that morning I tripped in front of him. I went looking for a job and came out with the love of my life. What woman could ask for more?

Finally, he moves up my body, kissing each piece of skin he exposes. When at last our faces meet, he kisses me gently.

“I love you, Summer Madison.”

“And I love you, Lucan Forbes.”

“Forever?”

“Forever. Now less talking and more loving.”

“You don’t have to tell me that twice.”

Our chuckles soon turn to soft sighs as we make love way into the night.

Chapter Twenty Four

Lucan

“Theredrosesgoon the walkway and the white roses go in the bouquets along it. This is all wrong and needs to be done over. Now! You there, get those lights higher. We want them soft and intimate not hot and glaring in her face.”

There is a loud clatter and the event planner spins around.

“What the fuck was that!? Tell me you haven’t dropped the Madonna ice sculpture! I’m going to have your fucking head!”

“Everything coming together?” Sylvia asks from her perch beside me.

“I should certainly hope so. I’m afraid to walk in my own yard with Attila the Hun down there.”

We both continue to peek from behind the drapes in my office as we watch the patio being transformed. This evening will be a culmination of months of planning to surprise Summer for her birthday. I learned early in our new relationship that she is incredibly nosy. Lola tells me that surprising Summer has been difficult all her life as she seems to have a sixth sense whenever something is being planned. So, I am in cahoots with her to pull this one off on so many levels.

I check my watch. Two-thirty. She should be getting another rose delivered right now. And if Lola has planned the spa day properly, she should be getting a pedicure and manicure right now. It took some convincing for her to leave the house. At eight months pregnant in the middle of April with muggy weather as Spring leads into Summer, she is not a happy camper.
