"She cried and said ‘I love you’ every time she saw me, and all my friends at school said that I looked like her," Amanda had said matter-of-factly.

Christine had been doing everything in her power to make up for lost time, showering Amanda with love and affection at every opportunity. However, I didn’t know if Christine was ready to have Amanda over to her place alone, knowing that the responsibility might be too overwhelming for her to handle. At least, not for a while.

I sat up, needing Christine’s brutal opinion, Christine showed no mercy with her tongue, and my heart pounded in my chest.

"Did you see the picture I sent you?" I asked her.

Christine paused for a few seconds before replying.

"Oh, no… lemme open my inbox," she said, and I could hear the faint sound of her tapping away at her phone. My stomach churned with anticipation as I waited for her response.

Suddenly, Christine let out a gasp, and I could practically feel the excitement radiating from her. "Oh my God, it's so beautiful! Faith! Come over here, take a look at this!" she called out, and I strained to hear their conversation.

I heard Faith's voice come on the line, her words muffled but excited.

"That ring is every woman's dream, Anthony," she said, and I beamed with joy. My Laurawasevery man's dream, and I wanted to make her the perfect proposal.

Faith offered me advice on how to make the proposal go smoothly.

"Just act natural," she said. "See her when you usually see her and stop carrying the ring around with you. She'll catch you."

The ring was in my jacket pocket right now, and I hoped Laura wouldn’t notice. Despite my nervousness, I managed to compose myself and thank Faith for her kind words.

"You're welcome," she said before saying her goodbyes. "We have to run now, the kids are waiting."

I hung up the phone, thankful that Christine had taken the time to help me. It couldn’t have been easy for her. Christine had been through so much, dedicating her life’s work to the foundation she founded with Faith. She had needed to keep it a secret from her Mafia husband for years, but after her husband's death, she was finally free to live her life as she pleased. She had also inherited a large sum of money from her late husband's illegal dealings.

Now, the task of finding the perfect location to propose to Laura weighed heavily on my mind. It had to be grand, unforgettable, and filled with all the magic and romance that she deserved. Fortunately, I had Tank by my side—a man whose specialty was grandeur.

With a quick call to Juan, my trusted personal security guard, I knew I could have Tank in my office in a flash. Juan had earned the nickname "The Enforcer" around the office because of his strict control of who could and couldn’t enter my private office sanctuary. But at this moment, I was grateful for his vigilance. His unwavering dedication to his role was the reason why my office at the mansion had remained a place of peace and productivity.

As Tank, a.k.a. “The Boujee”, entered my office, his confident presence filled the room. He was a man of style and taste, someone who knew how to create the perfect setting for a special occasion. I explained my predicament to him, and he listened carefully, his mind already working on finding the ideal location.

After a few moments of contemplation, Tank presented me with a list of locations that would take Laura's breath away. From the rooftop of a skyscraper to a secluded beach in the tropics, each location was more enchanting than the last.

Together, Tank and I weighed the pros and cons of each location, considering factors such as ambiance, privacy, and accessibility. In the end, we settled on a beautiful garden in the heart of the city. It was a lush, romantic space filled with fragrant flowers and trickling fountains, the perfect setting for a proposal that would be both grand and intimate.

Chapter twenty-six

Laura

As I sat at the restaurant waiting for Becca, I felt a twinge of guilt for usually being the late one. The bright and beautiful weather outside seemed to mock me for my tardiness, with the sun casting long shadows on the street and making everything seem more vibrant. I ordered a drink and messaged Becca to let her know I was there, starting to wonder if she was okay.

I moved to a seat near the window so I could distract myself by watching the people going about their business on the street. It was a bustling scene, with cars honking and pedestrians rushing by, but somehow it all seemed to blend together into a peaceful hum. I found myself lost in thought as I watched the world go by.

Suddenly, I spotted Becca coming up the street, and I felt instant relief. I had been holding my breath without even realizing it. As she entered the restaurant, she scanned the room with a look of determination, her eyes squinting in the dim light, and I waved eagerly to get her attention.

Something about her demeanor seemed off, though. She was practically glowing with happiness, and it seemed to emanate from her in waves. I felt more than a little curious as she approached me.

"Girl, what is up?" I asked, trying to get to the bottom of things.

Without saying a word, she thrust her left hand out at me, palm down, and I gasped as I saw the glimmering ring on her finger. Without thinking, I jumped up from my seat and enveloped her in a hug, not even caring that the other people in the restaurant were giving us strange looks.

"My friend just got engaged!" I shouted to the entire restaurant as we sat down. "Congratulations, Becca! This is amazing!"

She blushed at the attention and waved off my compliments. "Stop, you're embarrassing me," she said, but I could see the happiness shining in her eyes.

As she started to tell me the story of how her now-fiancé had proposed, I felt a pang of envy for her. It seemed like everything was falling into place for her, and I wondered when I would find that kind of joy in my own life.
