“Bake love not war,” he says, raising his arms dramatically.

“On second thought, we might need you in our marketing department,” I laugh. “But seriously, Ed, I need your help.”

Ed leans in across the desk, excited by the prospects of another crazy venture.

“I want to propose,” I whisper conspiratorially.

Ed leans back in disappointment, his hands on his face.

“Well, I guess if I’m going to lose my best friend to matrimony, at the very least I should get some good cake out of it,” he laughs.

My driver pulls up in front of the bakery just as Cassidy starts to lock up. With a cake box in her hands, she struggles with the lock.

“Hey, beautiful,” I say, climbing out of the car to help her.

“Hey, handsome,” she smiles and leans over to kiss me. Her lips taste of powdered sugar and she smells of chocolate and vanilla.

“You smell delicious,” I say, taking a deep breath.

“I wish I looked just as delicious,” she says, ripping off her hair net and letting her hair fall to her shoulders.

“You always look delicious,” I playfully bite her earlobe. “I want to take you out tonight.”

Cassidy looks down at her clothes. “Okay, I’ll need to go home and change first,” she says.

My heart flutters every time she calls the penthouse home instead of ‘your place’. It makes me want to make things official even more.

“You’re perfect just as you are,” I say, leading her to the car. I open the door for her and she slides in. With the door closed I pull my phone out of my pocket and call Ed.

“Is everything set?” I ask him.

“Almost,” he says.

“You know, for a guy who still doesn’t believe in love, you really are quite the romantic,” I laugh.

Ed laughs too, then turns to bark orders at someone behind him. “I never said I didn’t believe in love, I just don’t believe it should last longer than one night,” he says. “Now let me work.”

I walk around and slide back into the car next to Cassidy.

“I made something for you,” she says, opening the cake box.

Inside are the pancakes she made me the first time we spoke about the bakery.

She scoops some of the chocolate ganache onto her finger and slides it into my mouth. I lick her finger clean, humming around it as the memory of that morning floods back and sends blood rushing through my body.

“I’m going to need to ask you to save all that heat for later,” I say. “We’re going to need it.”

Cassidy narrows her eyes trying to figure out what I’m thinking. I look away from her playfully.

“It’s a surprise,” I laugh. “But I promise you, you’re going to like it.”

The car is filled with quiet excitement and the driver does his part too. He drives around in circles and takes the long way to the private airfield just out of town.

I look over at Cassidy and she’s confused. She stares out the window trying to piece together what the surprise is, but I’m sure she won’t see it coming.

“What’s going on, Ethan?” she asks, laughing. “What have you done?”

I don’t answer, I just lead her out toward the helicopter.
