“Are we recreating our first date?” she asks, giggling.

“Something like that,” I say. “But you’re going to have to be patient and see for yourself.”

Ed trots out toward us, beaming in spite of himself. He taps me on the shoulder as he walks past without speaking.

“Ed?” Cassidy asks. “He won’t even say hi?’

I shake my head. “This is not about Ed, and besides, you know how he is.”

Cassidy shakes her head. “He is how you used to be,” she laughs.

We continue walking toward the helicopter, the evening air is filled with the smell of jasmine and lilies.

“Do you smell that?” I ask her, making sure she notices every small detail.

“Flowers. How did you get a whole airfield to smell like a nursery?” she asks.

“They aren’t just any flowers,” I explain. “I saw you smile when you smelled these at the nursery on our second date so I sent you a whole bouquet to your apartment,” I laugh. “Their scent still makes you smile. Have I ever told you how much I love your smile?” I ask, kissing her on the cheek as we walk.

Cassidy blushes then gasps when she realizes I’ve walked her into a circle of flowers, every bloom the nursery had available.

“Ethan, this is too much,” she says, picking one of the flowers out and putting it behind her ear.

“And yet, it isn’t enough. It still doesn’t show how much you mean to me,” I say, squeezing her hand.

I hold Cassidy steady as she climbs the short flight of stairs into the helicopter. She had recognized it by sight the first time I brought her out here, but she wasn’t impressed. This time it’s different.

She turns to me to speak, but the words don’t come out. Her eyes fill with tears and she hugs me close.

The old woman and the old man walk past her, both touching her shoulder as they walk out.

“How did you do this, Ethan? This is insane!” she says, touching the tables, the chairs, and even the table cloths we used to recreate the small bakery she loves so much.

“I remember how much you love that place. But again, we would have been too late to get a slice of anything now, so I thought to bring it to you,” I say shrugging.

Cassidy is speechless, she walks around still shocked by everything and it’s only the beginning.

“Come sit down,” I say, showing her to her seat and helping her buckle up. Her hands are shaking and so are mine, and she doesn’t even know what’s coming.

I sit down across from her and lift the dome on the key lime pie in front of us.

“I know this is not your favorite. It’s mine,” I announce. “Do you remember why I love key lime pie so much?” I ask her.

She nods. “The taste of success,” she says. “Are we celebrating some new deal I don’t know about?”

“Yes,” I smile. “But that’s not all we’re celebrating.”

Cassidy frowns. “What are we celebrating then?”

“We’ve figured out how to manufacture love,” I say.

Cassidy looks at me trying to understand what I'm talking about as we’re lifted up into the air and into the night.

“I think I’ve been in love with you from the moment I first saw you,” I confess. “It just took me a while to see it.”

Cassidy blushes. “I don’t know what to say,” she whispers.

“You don’t have to say anything. Not yet,” I say, serving her a slice of pie.
