And that cannot be. He’s too much and I can never be enough for any man.

Or so I’ve been told.

ChapterSix

DEXTER

I sit in my chair at the office the next morning, knowing that I screwed up. I pushed too hard. Daisy hasn’t looked at me all morning. The only plus that I can see is that she’s not scared of me…at all. As a matter of fact, she seems to be enjoying the hell out of herself shooting me little glares when she thinks I’m not looking.

Little does she know that I’m always looking. Looking at her beautiful face, looking out for her. I can’t look away. She’s like a magnet that I’m drawn to at every fucking hour of the day.

But if I’m that screwed up, she seems to be fine with never looking directly at me again.

Which isn’t going to work for me. I need to look into her soft green eyes and see desire like I did yesterday. See how much she wanted me, needed me, couldn’t stay away from me.

It was all there in her eyes. And it was also clear that she wasn’t happy with it. Not at all. She didn’t want to want me. I think she doesn’t want to want anybody.

Which I get. I totally understand it.

But I’m not just some random dude off the street. I’m her boss. And I intend to be more soon.

I’ve set my plans in motion. My buddy on the police force is keeping an eye on the dickhead that thinks Daisy is his. Fucking idiot! Anyone with half a brain can see that she’s mine. He’s got nothing on her.

But I scared her and she’s not going to let me in again. So I’m going to do what has to be done to keep her safe. Even if she hates me. And she will. She will be seriously pissed off.

My phone rings and I pick it up, growling into the receiver. “What?”

There’s a beat and then a rough chuckle. “Wow! You sound like you’re about to lose your mind. Anything wrong?”

Franklin’s voice makes me sit up and grind my teeth. “Other than the asshole that thinks he can touch what’s mine? No. Nothing at all. What do you have for me?”

He sighs. “Well, we’ve got a slight problem. We’ve lost him.”

“You what!”I roar and sit up, immediately feeling fury like roar through me. “How the hell did that happen?”

“We think that he spotted us and snuck out of the hotel he was staying in last night. I talked to the front desk clerk and they said that he checked out yesterday, saying he was leaving today. He prepaid for the extra day.”

“Shit!” I grind my teeth together. “Why do I have a feeling he’s got a plan and he wants to make sure that he’s mobile before he gets it going?”

“I’d say that’s a pretty good guess.”

“What do you think we should do?”

“I think you need to get your pretty lady somewhere out of the way until we can hunt his ass down. And you need to make sure that someone stays with her all the time.”

“That’s no problem. That will be me.”

His deep voice, full of amusement, comes down the line. “I had a feeling that would be your response. I agree that’s your best option. Just make sure that you get it done soon. We can’t be sure where the hell he’s at or what he’s planning but it’s unlikely that he left town and he’s not going to engage.”

“Engage? That’s a nice word for the shit I saw in those police reports.”

“I told ;you not to look at it. That it would just piss you off.”

“Yeah. I still prefer to have all the information I can get before I go into a situation.”

“This isn’t a deal you’re making,” he scoffs.

“You’re wrong. This is the biggest deal of my life. The only one that’s ever mattered.”
