“I agree. I have a lot of questions about why you both look like someone beat the hell out of you.”

He nodded and took a sip from the steaming liquid in the paper cup. “You already know the answer.”

“Who started it?”

“Chase.”

The muscles in my back tensed and I stood up a bit taller. I already knew that, too.

Chase and Kat approached, side-by-side.

“Okay, so we’re going to go for a while,” Kat stated.

“Teagan, will you be okay?” Chase asked.

“She’ll be fine,” Jensen answered for me, his tone trite.

I could see Chase visibly stiffen so I tried to reassure him. “I’m okay. I’ll text if I find anything else out.”

His eyes locked on mine and I could see he didn’t want to leave.

“Okay.” He diverted his gaze in Jensen’s direction briefly, and then back to me. “Let’s go, Kat.” He ran an errant hand through his hair and I couldn’t help but notice the angry bruise on his temple.

She jingled her keys. “I’m ready.”

“Hey, if you want to go back to the house, here are my keys.” I reached into my purse to grab the house key on its keychain and held it out to Kat. She accepted them automatically.

“Let’s go,” Chase murmured, and soon they were gone.

I turned to Jensen. His expression studied me, seriously.

“Do you want to go to the cafeteria? We can get a table in the corner. It will be better than here. We’ve already put on enough of a show.”

“Okay.” We started to walk through the hospital toward the elevators that would take us up to the fourth floor where the cafeteria was located.

We didn’t talk at all until we were seated facing each other in a booth at one end of the cafeteria. Jensen had purchased a diet soda for me and set it down in front of me.

He took his seat and in seconds, bluntly told me what was on his mind.

“I think we should get a divorce.”

We’d talked about it years earlier but after Remi got sick all thoughts of it were put on the back burner. I sucked in a surprised breath, and he continued, contemplating his hands wrapped around his cup, holding the now lukewarm coffee. “Wow. I didn’t expect that tonight.”

“We both know where your heart is Teagan. I’m not going to pretend that it doesn’t sting, but it’s time. Maybe you and Chase can—”

My eyes locked with Jensen’s; my soul filled with sadness. “Chase may not feel the same way.”

Jensen’s face twisted wryly. “Right. Do you see my face?”

“He’s got someone else, now.”

“Maybe so, but that doesn’t mean you and I should stay together.”

I nodded. “I agree. You deserve someone who loves you more than anything.”

He nodded sadly. “Yeah. I do.”

Inadvertently, my words had said that person wasn’t me. It wasn’t anything either of us didn’t know, but still, it was painful.
