“We got her heart started again and as soon as we’re sure she’s stable we’re moving her to ICU. We’re running a series of tests to look for the infection so we can treat it, properly. She’s a very sick little girl, but we’re through this hurdle.”

I closed my eyes and swallowed hard. “Oh, thank God. Can we see her?” I asked.

“In a little while. She’s still unconscious, so she wouldn’t know you’re there.”

“That doesn’t matter. We want to see our little girl,” Chase said.

“I’ll come get you when we’re ready to move her, but the doctor will only allow two visitors at a time.”

I was still shaking and leaned on Chase as he held me by his side. Jensen’s fingers tightened on mine.

“Thank you,” Jensen murmured.

“We appreciate all of you in there,” Chase added.

The nurse nodded with a gentle smile. “She’s not out of the woods, but you’re welcome.”

After she left us, we stood awkwardly. “Do you want to get something to eat or something to drink?” Jensen asked.

I glanced at Jensen and then at Chase, hoping their fragile truce would remain firmly in place, but it was clear neither of them was comfortable. I dropped Jensen’s hand and stepped out of Chase’s embrace, despite the calming effect it had on me. “I think I’m just going to wait. You go ahead,” I replied.

Chase’s phone, though out of sight, started to ring and he stepped away and pulled it from the back pocket of his dark jeans to answer it. “Hello?” He moved a few feet away to take the call in more privacy and Kat stepped forward to hug me.

“Thank goodness.” She sighed heavily. “Is there anything you need from the house? Can I get it?

I shook my head. “No. I’ll be okay.”

“Maybe Chase will want to run back to the hotel for a shower and a fresh set of clothes. He looks a little worse for wear.” It was clear she was referencing the traveling, but also the blood on his now ripped shirt. “Plus, then you and Jensen can go see Remi. I’ll call and get her room number.”

My eyes met hers. They were red-rimmed, as no doubt mine were, too. I felt tired, and wiped at the skin beneath my eyes in an attempt to rid my face of any telltale signs of tears and smeared makeup. Jensen had walked away and was getting coffee from a beverage station set up on the far side of the waiting room.

“That might be a good idea. I’d like to talk to Jensen, too.”

Kat nodded and squeezed my arm. “This is quite a difficult situation and hard on all of you. After all this time, it’s gotta be hard for Jensen to see you and Chase together.”

“I’m sure it is.”

“But, it’s also hard on Chase.”

“I know. I can feel them both suffering. I wish there was something I could do about it, but I don’t know how.”

Kat nodded again. “I know. Bronwyn may come back with us, so I just want to prepare you.”

I drew in a shuttering breath and went to sit down on a nearby chair. Kat took the one next to me. “I appreciate that. I’m dreading it. What is she like?”

Kat huffed and half shrugged. “Pretty, but fake, mostly. She’s all gooey on the surface, but I sense a viper underneath.”

“Awesome. Who is she?”

“She’s one of the team trainers and they've dated. That’s all I know.”

Jensen came back with two cups of coffee in hand and held them out to both Kat and I. “Would you like some?”

Kat accepted his offering, thanked him, and then moved over to where Chase was standing. He was just ending his call and they were out of earshot.

“No, thank you.”

“I think we should talk,” he said solemnly.
