A single tear dripped from the corner of my eye and over the bridge of my nose to plop on the pillow. “I can never make it up to you. I know that.”

“I’ll think of something,” he let out a small laugh that should have comforted me, but I was still so worried about Remi. What if we lost her? The thought made me want to die myself.

“Over the past month when Dr. Radar mentioned the transplant, he said Remi will be isolated after radiation and for a few days after she gets the marrow. She’ll be frightened and I won’t be able to comfort her.”

His hand rubbed up and down my arm. “She knows you love her. She’s a smart little shit; we’ll explain it to her in advance. It will be tough but we’ll get through it. All of us.”

My phone started to ring from my purse sitting on a counter just inside the door to the room. “That’s probably Jensen,” I explained, pushing back the blanket and starting to rise from the bed. I regretted having to untangle from the comfort of Chase’s arms. “He’s calling to check on Remi. I talked to him after the surgery when you were with Bronwyn, but he wanted to know what we found out about scheduling the procedure.”

“Understandable. He’s a good guy.” He said the words, but they were stilted and I knew deep down, he was struggling to mean those words. It was another reason we needed to talk.

I paused and looked at him. He was pushing off the floor and settling back into the chair. “I’m glad you think so.” The phone continued to ring until I was able to pull it out of my bag and answer. “Hello?”

“Hey, it’s me. Have you heard from Dr. Radar?” Jensen asked.

“He hasn’t been in yet. I can call you to fill you in later after we speak to him.”

“I should be there.” His tone was weary.

I could tell he was worried that Chase would replace him in Remi’s heart. “You will be.”

“Of course; Chase is there.” It was a statement, not a question.

“Uh huh. He’s very concerned about Remi.”

“When will you know if switching the port worked to get rid of the infection?”

“Probably tomorrow, but her fever has already dropped, so I’m optimistic. She’s still groggy, but I think they’ll try to wake her up to eat dinner soon.”

“Okay. My producer knows what’s going on and I can be there within a few hours if I’m needed. Don’t do this without me. I need to be there.”

“I know that. I’d never do that to you.”

“Okay, good. Well, I have to go. The pre-game show starts in ten minutes and I have to get hooked up. Tell Remi I love her and I’ll call her tomorrow morning.”

“Okay. Have a good show. If she wakes up I’ll put it on for her.”

“Thanks. See ya.”

I replaced the phone in my purse and turned back to Remi and Chase. My breath on the inside of my mask was starting to make me feel uncomfortable. I wanted to pull it off so I could breathe. “Jensen is commentating tonight. The Rams are playing the Giants in New York.” I felt like I had to explain. “He feels bad that he’s not here.”

I hoped mentioning Jensen wouldn’t be painful to Chase. The whole thing was still awkward, but I had to figure out how to deal with it. Jensen and I might be getting a divorce, but Remi loved him and needed him in her life.

“I understand that he loves Remi.”

“I think he’s worried you won’t want him to see her, but he—”

“Even if I hated his guts, I’d never do that to Remi, Teagan.”

“That’s what I told him yesterday.”

There was a knock on the door. “Come in,”

I turned as Dr. Radar pushed it open slowly and peeked inside before entering when Chase waved him in. He and the nurse following him in were also dressed in the yellow gown and masks. “How’s my little patient? The surgeon said the procedure went well and we’re about ninety percent sure that the infection originated in the old port. The good news is that her vitals are good and her fever is down. I think we’ve turned a corner.”

Chase stood and moved to the foot of Remi’s bed with me as Dr. Radar looked her over. He listened to her heart and felt her forehead, and glanced at the last set of vitals another nurse had written there an hour before. “Her white count has gone down a bit.”

“When do you think we’ll be able to proceed with the transplant?” Chase asked anxiously. His voice was soft, but I could sense the urgency behind his words.
