“Fell down, huh?”

She nods, but her eyes tell me she is lying. Someone sent him to the hospital. Someone who has a lot of anger in him, resentment too. And I’m convinced that someone is Dan. Or Tucker. Maybe the whole pack? Debbie’s dead, Tucker feels partly responsible, but he’s also mad at Matt, no question about it. The son of a bitch hurt his little sister.

“Was it Tucker?” My voice sounds like a whisper.

Yeleen straightens up, her eyes hard. “I told you, Iris, Matt fell.”

“Fell…” I repeat sarcastically. “Or someone helped him to fall?”

The man is scum, I’m not saying he’s not…but part of me wants to know what happened. How far did we get back at him?

“I have to go,” Yeleen exclaims. “I’ll see you later.”

I watch her walk away and back toward the bathroom. The door to the right, the one leading to the men’s room, opens. A tall figure walks through the door. A figure I know very well.

Tucker.

With his eyes locked straight ahead, he hasn’t noticed me yet. I watch him on the sly from a few steps away. His beard is longer. He apparently hasn’t shaved since the last time I saw him. I didn’t expect to see him at school today. His eyes are no longer ringed like the other day, but his eyebrows are furrowed, making his gaze stern and cold. Seeing him like this makes me want to pull his hair to hurt him and then ask him if he’s okay.

I’m stupid. After everything that happened, after his rejection, I’m still worried about him. I can’t see it any other way. He lifts his head, and his eyes meet mine. He frowns a little more just before he stops. Still, he looks me up and down, thinking deeply.

That’s right, think, asshole.

I keep a neutral expression on my face while openly staring at him in turn. One detail catches my attention. A few feet separate us, and yet I can see the state of his hands. The knuckles of his fingers are completely raw.

I raise my head and stare at him, my lips half-open. It looks like I was right. Matt is in the hospital. And he didn’t fall. Tucker’s posture changes slightly at my behavior.

He knows that I know what he did.

He takes a step in my direction, his gaze still cold.

“You hit Matt. You sent him to the hospital.”

And he had to make sure we didn’t know it was him.

He says nothing in his defense.

We stare at each other for several minutes. Neither of us speaks. Part of me wants to ask him if he’s holding it together. That said, I mentally replay our last conversation. I told him I loved him and he left me, unable to even look me in the eye.

Because I know what I would have seen in his eyes: love for me. Fuck, he decided to take away our happiness and I can’t do anything. I was serious with Yeleen, I don’t want to suffer anymore. I don’t have the strength anymore.

Finally, he breaks the silence.

“Hi.”

I raise an eyebrow. Seriously, did he just give me a stupid greeting?

I walk away without a word, but he stops me. “Iris, wait.”

“Let me go.”

He doesn’t listen to me, blocking my way with his body. I cross my arms over my chest, waiting for him to say what he has to say. Looking at him hurts. So many conflicting feelings. I don’t fucking know what to do.

I don’t know if he notices the dark circles under my eyes but his posture changes slightly.

“Are you okay?” he asks.

I can’t hold back the joyless laugh that comes out of my throat. “Are you fucking serious?”
