I can’t believe it. Did his mother drop him his head as a baby?

I don’t let him answer and continue, “Do I look okay? You’re not fine, but you hurt me too. I told you I loved you, and you turned your back on me. So no, I’m not okay.”

“I told you my reasons,” he mumbles through his teeth as if suddenly upset.

I put my hands up, telling him to be quiet.

“It’s okay, I understand your reasons. You don’t think you have the right to be happy, so you threw me away like a piece of shit. I’m not going to chase after you. I’ve been through a lot, Tucker. I don’t want to be unhappy anymore, okay?”

These words hurt, but they are necessary. Necessary for me to move on.

He grabs my elbow as I pass by him to leave. His hand wraps around me, his skin on mine electrifies me for a moment, but I contain my emotions. My heart rate speeds up though.

“I know you’re mad at me,” he whispers beside me, “but don’t hate me. I won’t stand for it.”

“I don’t hate you. Because despite the pain, I’m stupid enough to still love you. But my feelings will go away, Tucker. And I won’t be here anymore.”

He doesn’t answer me.

“I hope you get better,” I whisper, pulling his hand away and walking around him.

I feel his gaze burn my back, but I ignore it.

This is the end of our conversation. Full of unspoken words. Happiness destroyed. Support gone. This time, it is not him who rejects me, it is me who leaves.

A few hours later, I finish my shift at the bar. There weren’t many customers, normal for a Monday night. My head was elsewhere all evening, and my colleague Buck had to correct me several times because I had made a mistake in the orders.

Anyway, there was one thing I did see tonight…it was Dan, at the back of the room, drinking beers, with a blank stare. He didn’t let anyone get close to him, locked in his bubble. On his face, there was no more pain, only hatred. Did he help Tucker beat up Matt?

When I finish my shift, I sigh in contentment and drop my cleaning rag on the bar. Buck leans next to me, looking concerned.

“Are you all right, honey?”

I open my mouth, unsure. “It’s been a rough few days. I need some sleep.”

He finally nods. “Then go and rest.”

And that’s my intention. I leave ten minutes later, stifling a yawn. It’s only 11:30 p.m., but fortunately for me, my shift was ending early tonight. I cross the half-lit parking lot, in a hurry to get to my car.

I get to my car and take out my car keys, but what I see leaves me frozen. The right front tire is completely flat. Damn, did I run over something and get a flat tire without realizing it on the way here?

Damn it. That’s the way to end an evening in style.

Headlights shines on me from the right, a horn blares, and I hold back an expletive while jumping.

A huge red Dodge is parked in front of me. Someone is rolling down the driver’s window.

“What’s wrong?” Dan asks me, leaning over to me.

I kick my tire to show him. “My tire is completely flat. I must have gotten a flat on the way here.”

He makes a little face. “Do you have a spare tire?”

I shake my head and massage my temples. If my father saw me from up there, he’d yell at me. “No, I don’t. I’ll get a cab and take a look at it tomorrow.”

“Don’t be silly. Get in, I’ll take you home.”
