“Hello?” she answered the phone without looking.

“Greer-bear?”

“Cash? Hey, how are you? How you been? What’s going on?” she stumbled over her questions.

“I’m good. Are you okay?”

“Of course I’m good. I just . . . what’s going on? I’ve already asked that.”

“You been drinking?”

“No. Rude.”

He huffed out a laugh. “Hey, have you gone out or something? I’m at Aidan’s place and you’re not here.

“Oh no. I’m not staying there anymore.”

“You went to a hotel?”

“No. I’m staying with Hack.”

“You’re . . . staying with Hack?” he asked slowly. “That guy from the other night? Why the hell would you be staying with him?”

“Um, well, because he’s kind of my boyfriend.”

“Kind of your boyfriend? What do you mean, kind of your boyfriend?”

“Sorry. That sounded weird. He’s my boyfriend.”

“And you’re now living with him? Don’t you think that happened awfully fucking quickly? Damn it, Greer. What the hell? You never leave your apartment and then you fall for the first guy you meet? Do you even know him?”

“You know . . . you’re pretty judgy for someone who disappeared from my life for nearly nine years. Where have you been? What have you been up to?”

Something niggled in her brain. There was something wrong about this conversation, but she was too incensed to take a moment to think about what he’d just said.

“How the fuck didn’t I know you weren’t staying here? Fuck.”

“How would you know when you’ve barely even spoken to me. I came all this way to see you, Cash, and you have no time for me.”

There was some harsh breathing and she winced. Shit. This was a good way to push him away.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I had no right to say that.”

“No, you’re right,” he said. “I disappeared on you and Aidan. And I haven’t told you anything . . . because I don’t know how. I don’t know what to say that would make it all right. And the truth is . . . the truth isn’t something I can even really tell you. So, what do I do? Make shit up?”

“No, don’t do that. Just tell me . . . tell me you’re back for good. Or if you have to leave, that you’ll tell me first.”

He blew out a breath. “Yeah. I can promise you that. If I have to go, I won’t leave without saying goodbye.”

“All right,” she whispered.

“I missed you, pimpleface,” he told her.

“I missed you too, buttbreath.” She closed her eyes. “You’re safe, right?”

“I can take care of myself.”

That wasn’t really an answer.
