“Daddy?” Stone supplied. “Or lover? Since that rhymes with brother. Although perhaps not a good idea to say that to Sav’s face.”

“Urgh! You are no help at all!”

“I voted to let someone else pick them up,” Stone said. “You wanted to do it yourself. So here we are.”

“Greer!” Aidan roared. “Let’s go.”

She sighed as she got up. Stone followed her out of the house. “At this point, maybe it would be a good thing if my stalker turned up. We could sick Aidan on him instead of Hack.”

Aidan was muttering as they got in the car with him. He started the car and drove out of the driveway.

“Whoa, man, ease up,” Stone warned from the backseat. “Your sister hasn’t buckled her seatbelt yet.”

“What? Squirt, buckle your seatbelt.”

“That’s what I was doing,” she said with exasperation. “Give me a chance. Aidan, you’re acting like a crazy person.”

“Really? I’m a crazy person? I go on vacation for the first time in years and the whole world implodes. Where was Cash?”

“What do you mean?”

“Why wasn’t he looking after you? If you discovered you had a stalker, then you should have called him and he could have moved in with you.”

“Ahh, I don’t know what brother you’re talking about, but Cash can barely look at me, let alone talk to me.”

“What? What the hell?”

“I mean . . . he was a bit put out when he heard I was living with Hack, but I soon set him straight. And I’ve barely heard from him since. He doesn’t answer my calls, rarely replies to my texts. It’s like he doesn’t want a sister anymore.” She sniffled. Shoot. She’d told herself she wasn’t going to cry over Cash. “It’s like losing him all over again. Only, this time he’s a complete stranger. You’d think that would make it easier!”

“Jesus, man, stop her from crying!”

“How?”

“Pull over and hug her. Or I’m calling Hack. I should call him anyway.”

Aidan pulled the car over to the side of the road before undoing his belt as Stone jumped out of the backseat.

“Sorry,” she said, trying to wipe away her tears.

“Come here, pimplebutt,” Aidan said, reaching over to draw her into his arms. “Has he really been like that?”

“Yes. And I’m trying not to let it hurt my feelings. But it’s h-hard. I missed h-him so m-much. And it h-hurts that he d-didn’t miss m-me at all.”

“That’s not true, Squirt.”

“It is. Otherwise why wouldn’t he want to spend any t-time with me? I d-don’t even know where he w-was!”

“If it makes you feel better, he won’t tell me anything either. The baboonface.”

She sobbed out a laugh and sat back to look up at him, wiping at her nose with her sleeve.

“Ew, gross.” He drew a tissue from the glovebox. “Here. Why is this car so clean, anyway? Did you clean it before you picked us up?”

“Why would I need to do that?”

“Because you always eat in the car and then leave your trash everywhere.”

“I do not!”
