Her inner muscles squeezed hard around him, then they too released, transforming in convulsions that left her speechless. His thrusts into her erratic rhythm were hard and sure, guiding her through the climax.

She was still shaking when he pinned her on the bed once more and surged into her. The taste of his release made her claw at his back and clamp her thighs around him.

His shout rang in her ears, and his words were triumphant in their Union. Feel how strong you are.

Strong enough to hold him. To fight for him. To keep him safe.

We’re both safe. You need to let go of me for now. I shouldn’t be inside you for the final change.

She didn’t understand, but she trusted him. She found the Will to untangle herself from him. He slid his fangs out of her neck and pulled out of her swiftly, leaving a rush of wetness trickling out of her. Her teeth tightened on his throat. She wasn’t sure she could stop biting.

That’s all right. Keep drinking.

He lowered himself over her again, this time only holding her under his weight. She began to see why when her skin prickled. Her every nerve tingled. And then sensation inundated her.

She screamed against his throat.

Her skin felt raw. Only the smoothness of his Hesperine skin and the pressure of his body gave her relief. Thank the Goddess the sheets were Orthros silk, perfectly smooth against her tortured sense of touch. She lay there without moving or uttering a sound, she knew not how long, hiding from stimulation.

His voice in her mind soothed her. Your sense of touch is the last change. It’s too much now, but when you grow used to it…it will be incredible.

The last change? It is finished?

He massaged her jaw with deft fingers. The joint unlocked, and he eased her head back onto the pillow.

He looked down at her with emotions in his eyes that would take her centuries to name. You have reached Completion. You are Hesperine, inside and out. My Hesperine.

Gratitude filled their Union. It was built into her new bones and her regrown heart.

My Grace, he murmured in her mind. Rest now. Spend your first Slumber in my arms.

She slipped into the deepest sleep she had ever known.

Lio heard her new heart ease into the steady rhythm of the Slumber, and his own heart calmed in his chest. Silence fell over their Sanctuary, unbroken by mortal breath.

Her body felt small under his, but her aura emanated power. He couldn’t begin to understand what he sensed within her—and welling up from beneath their tower. Blood magic. Lustra magic.

All he knew right now was that she would live. Forever. They had time to learn her new nature. They had eternity.

She was immortal.

He rolled onto his side and looked at her. She was a work of art, her hair wild, her transformation painted across her olive skin in the deep maroon of their drying blood. Her fangs, barely tamed, peeked out at him between her slightly parted lips.

He had never beheld anything so beautiful as her lying there, sleeping off all her ordeals, as still as only a Hesperine could be. After everything she had endured in her life, he had never seen her so at peace.

Rolling onto his back, he rested her Slumbering form on top of him. He pulled the bedclothes over her to give her the smoothness and weight her new senses would want upon waking. She would need more care. More blood. He would make sure everything she required was ready before her Awakening.

But for now, he needed this. To rest with her in his arms. To feel every moment of her first Slumber easing past, knowing there would be so many more.

He listened to his blood flowing through her veins. Their mingled life force, thriving inside both of them. They had grown together, entangled for all time.

That force swelled in his changed heart, and he let it flare out of him in a spell light, bright and beautiful. He sent that beacon flying up through the ceiling to hover above their tower like one of the Goddess’s stars. Now all of Orthros would know.

A new Hesperine had been born tonight.

AWAKENING

Sleep, complete and dreamless, released her slowly. She surfaced gently toward his voice, his presence. Yes. She wanted to wake and be closer to him.
