Don’t be afraid of your hunger, he said. I’m right here.

She felt the gnawing fire in her belly first. Then the ravenous ache in her veins. Finally, her parched throat.

She wanted to scream, but couldn’t speak. She needed to touch him, but couldn’t move.

You’re safe, he soothed. Your mind has awoken, but the rest of you needs more time. Be patient with your body.

Her mind. Yes. She reached for him with the only thing that would obey her. Lio?

I’m here, Cassia.

So hungry.

I know, and I will give you all the blood you want.

Blood. You.

Yes. All of me.

She felt his hands on her cheeks, moving her head. His throat met her lips.

Yes, she cried out to him. Your vein.

Don’t worry. Your fangs will wake first.

Her canines shot out of her gums, her whole mouth aching with the need to bite. With one hand tangled in her hair and his other on her chin, he guided her mouth open and helped her press her fangs into his flesh.

His blood hit her tongue, driving back her panic. Yes. This. Nothing mattered but this. She fastened onto him and began her next feast.

His deep groan met her ears. His voice was gravelly with desire. “It feels so good, my Grace.”

She heard his heart racing, pumping blood into hers. She gulped him down.

“That’s right, Cassia. You’re a natural, just as I knew you would be.”

Sensation returned. The gentle pressure of his arms around her. His lap under her. The warm bath water that enclosed their bodies. The magic everywhere, immersing her.

She could move. She wrapped her arms around his neck, releasing him from her bite so she could sink her fangs into him again.

“Goddess,” he ground out. “I’ll never get enough of this feeling.”

Neither would she. Thrilling energy rushed through her. She had never felt so strong. Was she holding him too tight?

“You can’t hurt me,” he said. “We’re both immortal now.”

Immortal. She was immortal. She was a Hesperine.

At last, his blood sharpened her mind, and coherent thought returned. Memories came crashing back to her. Her first taste of his blood. Her body changing in his arms. Hours of ecstasy that had remade her into this.

Her new senses told her the truth. She could hear every sparkling droplet of water they stirred. She could smell every flower petal that floated around them. Replete with his blood, she lifted her head and opened her eyes.

They were home. Safe in Orthros Boreou, deep under their tower. He had brought her down into the bathing pool and surrounded her with soft veil spells that muffled the echoes. Dim, diffuse spell light showed her their reflection in the mirrors that lined the walls and ceiling.

Her own gaze glowed back at her, green-gold. Her jaw dropped, and she beheld her fangs.

“Look how magnificent you are,” he said.

She opened her mouth wider and tilted her head from side to side to admire her new canines. She had never felt more beautiful.
