“When?” His wing pulled her in tight.

“A few days. How long does your sperm stay alive?”

He let out a soft chuffing sound. “As long as it takes.”

“Delightful. Well, I have a question I might need to ask your medical team.”

He smiled. “What?”

“I have a new freckle that just appeared, and I want it checked out.”

Heboren chuckled. “You don’t say.”

Nova was suspicious. “You know what it is.”

“I would have to see it, but I am fairly sure what it is.” He turned and picked her up. “Let’s examine it now.”

She frowned in confusion, but he sent a soothing wave toward her, and that was enough for her. He wouldn’t be so calm if there were something wrong with her.

He carried her to their rooms and settled her on the bed. “Now, show me this freckle.”

She opened the seal on her dress and the clothing down beyond her hips. She craned her neck and grimaced. “The spot has grown. Right here.”

Heboren looked very closely at it and smiled. “Ah. That. Well, it means that the sperm and egg have collided, and if the pattern begins to expand across your belly, you are pregnant.”

“You are joking.” She was half wary, half appalled.

“I am not. You are right. Your species have very quick cycles. I thought it would take months or years. It has been weeks.” He smiled and then looked at her face. “You are not pleased?”

“I am shocked.” She pointed to her head. “This is my shocked face.”

He touched her mind, and she saw him slump in relief when she was happy... just freaked out.

He wrapped his arms around her and rolled to his back with her on his chest.

They were together as he wrapped his wings around them.

She had a thought. “Is gestation time the same?”

“Slightly longer. It takes a bit to make a Hmrain infant. We both have to work at it.”

Nova looked at him. “Is that why your cum only emerged for a few days before disappearing?”

He ran a hand down her back. “Yes.”

“So, you knew.”

“Suspected. Yes. Until the mark showed up, I could not be sure.”

She pressed her forehead to his chest. “Are there other Terrans who are in this situation?”

“None have yet brought a child to term. But there have been no losses either.”

“Well, that’s something. Can I talk with another consort?”

He stroked her back. “Of course. Hannah was the first of your people to become a consort. Mero has offered to let her speak to any consorts that we get from your species.”

“That’s kind of him.” She twisted her lips wryly.
