“I know who you are.”

“Do you know I love you, too?”

“Yes.”

“Can I tell you a secret?” he asked, raising his brows as he waited for a response.

“Daddy said it’s not good to keep grown men’s secrets. It’s usually not for good reasons.”

Mercer’s head whipped in my direction. I shrugged with a nod, confirming the exact words I’d shared with Aussie on several occasions.

“Well, it’s not a secret for real.”

“Then you can tell us both.”

She was a wise girl.

“You look just like your mother. I loved her, too.”

“Thank you. She thinks so, too. Daddy says I’m her all over again.”

“Because you are. You’re smart, caring, kind, curious, strong, beautiful, and all the other wonderful things that made Anna, Anna.”

“I feel so good in my heart,” Aussie explained, unable to determine the correct words to properly describe her emotions.

“That’s a good thing, niece. Okay? Feeling good in your heart is good.”

“Don’t keep Uncle Milo waiting. Come back to visit me. Not much. But, come back or call my tablet. Daddy gives me an hour of screen time a day. Maybe we can talk on my iPad. Does that sound like a deal?”

“Yes, baby girl. It sounds like a deal. I just need a number.”

“Can you call Daddy’s number? My iPad rings, too.”

Mercer chuckled, not understanding technology or what she was explaining. He’d been away for too long. He looked upward at me for help. I simply nodded, letting him know I’d handle it.

“Yeah. I can do that if you want.”

“Great. Not a lot.”

“Okay. Not a lot. I see you’re a bit reserved. So, maybe you do have a bit of your father in you.”

“She’s not a fan of people.”

“Neither are you, nigga.”

Shrugging, I didn’t protest. It wasn’t a secret and Aussie’s adaptation shouldn’t have been a surprise.

“Later, Uncle Mercer.”

“I love you, Aussie.”

“Today.”

“Hmm?”

“I’ll start loving you today.”

“Oh, that’s cold-blooded, but I’ll take that.”
