“You’re doing a splendid job, babe. I promise you are.”

“Thank you. I have a busy day ahead and I’m going to get to work. I just wanted to share the good news with you. I’m a little excited and a little scared.”

“Just like back then.”

“Just like back then,” I agreed.

“You’ve got this, babe. Everything will work out in your favor. I know this. God has His hands on you. He’s not done with you. I expect this to flourish, just like you will. Have you thought of a name for the business yet?”

“Yes. I think I have.”

“Yeah? What is it?”

“Subtle.”

“Subtle,” she repeated after me.

“Yes.”

“I like it, Aeir. Witnessing your shift and knowing exactly what subtle mean, I think it’s perfect.”

“Yeah? You’re serious?”

“Yes. I’m so serious, babe. It suits you.”

“I just think that a really nice piece of gold against your skin, as subtle as it may be, can elevate your look in a major way. It’s also one of those faint details that make you feel sophisticated, like a lady. The pieces I chose, they scream classic. I can’t wait to wear them myself.”

“I’m ordering one of everything. My card is itching to make a purchase. I’m going to make sure I have everyone on my floor and your old floor to make a purchase, too, so buy enough.”

“I only got eighty pieces to start, four of each.”

“That’s not enough, Aeir. I’ll take twenty of them. That leaves sixty pieces. We’d clear them out the first few minutes of launching.”

“So you think I should double the order?”

“He’s funding it. Triple it. You won’t regret it.”

“You’re making me blush.”

“I’m just being honest. Everyone was rooting for you. They’ll be more than happy to support.”

“I’m grateful for that. I’ll triple the inventory. I can modify the order I made.”

“That’ll be your best bet.”

“I’ll keep you updated on the progress. I won’t open for another sixty to ninety days, after the school year has started for us over here and I can focus.”

“Understood. Wherever you start, we’re there.”

“I know. This and so many other reasons is why I love you.”

“I love you, too, Aeir. Now, get back to work. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Alright. Talk to you later.”

We ended the call simultaneously. My thirst intensified as the dryness of my throat began to choke me. Parched, I visited the sink for a glass of filtered water from the hydrant. Standing near the sink was beginning to seem like an idea that needed to be reconsidered. The clear view out onto the land assisted me in my efforts to find Malachi. It didn’t take long before I discovered him among the greenery. His dark skin and long stature wouldn’t let me miss him.

I sipped from the glass, watching as he pushed around a piece of machinery that I was unfamiliar with. There was no doubt in my mind that my knees wouldn’t give out on me if I decided to stand there and watch him until his day ended. The idea was absurd, but I wasn’t completely opposed to it, either. The possibility of being spotted was what led me from the cliff and back to the table where I modified the order I’d placed online.
