“That was my second heart break.”

“Your parents’s death.”

“That was the first,” he admitted.

“For both you and Anna.”

“Yeah.”

“God, life has been so unkind to you.”

He said nothing, pulling me closer and wrapping his arm around me.

“Tell me about Anna,” he requested. “Did she know?”

Slowly, I nodded my head up and down, answering his question. He closed his eyes for a second and reopened them.

“It seems that way. From the things she said when you weren’t around to the things she did to prepare. It was as if she knew her time was coming. I’m saddened every time I hear the things that came from her mouth. Even with Aussie, she spoke as if time wasn’t on her side. She cherished the moments with her more than anything. My heart breaks for Anna, Malachi. That had to have been a scary time.”

He paused before looking off. When his eyes returned to me, I could tell there was something on his mind that he wanted to share but didn’t know how.

“Say it.”

“Do you remember the night? Who was involved? How it hap—”

I placed a finger to his lips while shaking my head, knowing I was disappointing him in the process.

“I don’t. I’m sorry.”

“It’s all good, Aeir. It’s been two years and I haven’t been able to find the person responsible. They didn’t leave a clue, as if they were paid professionals. There’s not a trace. Not even one. I just want my lick back.”

“I understand. You have every right to feel slighted.”

He kissed my lips again.

“So, where do we go from here?”

“We go to the motherfucking moon, baby.”

“Tell me, Malachi,” I inquired. “How do we get there?”

“We start with a full breakfast, courtesy of the man of your dreams.”

“Man of my dreams?” I sniggered.

“You said it. I didn’t.”

My stomach roared in the silence, causing us both to burst into laughter.

“Well, I guess I should get a head start, then, huh? You want to eat here, or would you like to come over to the main house?”

“You’re inviting me over?” Thrilled, I asked the rhetorical question.

“Consider it as much my home as it is yours, aight? Now, where you trying to have breakfast? It makes me no difference.”

“Since you put it that way, I want to return to the table where I pretty much lost my virginity on the first night.”

“You gave that shit right on up.”
