“How are we going to pull this off?”

“What about finding her a male companion who will sweep her off her feet?”

Dalton laughs to the ceiling. “Where are we going to find someone who’d fall in love with Mother? At the insane asylum?”

I roll my eyes. I’m serious. We need to get Claudia to retire. “What about the brain surgeon at the charity ball?”

“He wouldn’t have enough money to be her equal.”

“You’ve got to be kidding. A brain surgeon doesn’t have enough money?”

“Depends on if he uses his wealth to create wealth. Does he have a diverse investment portfolio?”

“He might. He did seem to linger around your mother that night, and they had at least two dances.”

“Fine. We can start with him. What about a dinner at my place? Call it a private event for the top donators.”

“I’ll take care of it this morning, then have my PA follow through.” I thread my arms over his shoulders. “I’ll be free for our lunch date.” Working until lunchtime every day and having the rest of the day off is amazing. My role is more interesting now that Dalton involves me in company decisions. It’s great having my own PA to delegate the time-consuming tasks. Dalton can leave the office at a reasonable hour and make sure we spend quality time with Rex. We always eat dinner together, tuck Rex into bed, and end the night cuddling on the couch.

I lean into Dalton and rest my head on his chest for a minute. He rubs my arms, and warmth flows through me.

I’m looking forward to having Dalton by my side at Melanie and Adam’s wedding. Rex is excited about being the ring bearer. Melanie took my advice and reserved the Rose Resort on Nantucket for their honeymoon. She’ll be parasailing, bike riding around the island, and getting sugar highs at Ellie’s bakery.

Dalton pulls back and brushes my nose. “What’s that sigh for? What are you thinking?”

“Nantucket. We need to revisit. I’ve tried several online recipes, and I need to know the secret ingredient that makes those oatmeal cookies so moreish.”

He laughs. “Jamieson’s ones don’t meet your standards either. We’ll have to go back soon.”

“Melanie could bring some back after her honeymoon.”

“How are your sisters?”

“Our bridesmaids-to-be are having fun planning an extravagant wedding with your money.” I scoff. “Much to Claudia’s disgust how I’m not consulting her on every decision. She had a couple of good ideas, which I will incorporate just to keep on her good side. I’ve learned it’s okay to compromise on occasion with your mom. I understand now why you choose your battles.”

“Exactly. Thanks for putting up with Mother. We don’t get a say in who our parents are, but we can choose our partner. I’m glad I chose you, Pamela.”

Our lips join once more, and I breathe in Dalton’s delicious cologne. His heart beats in sync against mine as he transports me to my happy place—no longer a daydream anymore, but a reality.
