“No,” she smiled softly. “Mother was sure if the souls were truly meant to be bonded, it would work. None did though. We just assumed that it had to be the chosen work of the universe.” Persephone shrugged, “I guess she was right.”

Devon reached over to take her hand in his and ran his thumb across the marking on her skin.

“Rebirth and faithfulness,” she whispered as she watched where his thumb trailed over the tattoo. He looked up, her eyes following to his. “The mark, they symbolize rebirth and faithfulness.”

Devon gave her the most gentle and loving smile.

“Perfect,” he whispered. “Absolutely perfect.”

Chapter 32

Devon woke with a start and realized he must have fallen back asleep when they’d returned from their early morning snack. He rolled over to find Persephone gone and groaned knowing that meant it was time to get back to reality.

Not bothering to get up, he used his powers to portal to his room. He assumed since he didn’t use the shadows to move through portals, his would be called a light jump, like Persephone’s sisters. He’d save that observation to speak with Persephone about later, he needed to focus on dressing and calming his nerves before seeing his wife.

His wife.

Descending the stairs, a smile started to cross his face before he heard the voices coming from the study. Persephone was here, and unfortunately for his plans to relax this morning, so were her sisters.

He really wanted a moment with Persephone alone, but it was best he got this over with. Now that he was bound to Persephone, he really needed Hera to not want to skin him alive every time she saw him.

Moving past the Reevkas with a nod as they opened the door, he froze as the room went eerily silent at his entrance.

“Demeter,” Hera whispered, her hand coming to her mouth, shaking. “The forest outside… that was you?”

Devon stared right at her, caught off guard by whatever was happening in this room.

“Your father’s name, what was it?” Hera asked Devon as she stood up, then turned to Persephone before he could answer. “What was it?”

Persephone looked to him as her eyebrows furrowed before answering.

“Demetri,” she responded, then watched Hera’s face transform with clarity while he felt like

he had fallen down a rabbit hole.

“A family name?” Amphitrite asked as she moved closer to examine Devon like he might hold

the answers they had been looking for.

Devon simply nodded, not really looking any of the sisters in the eyes. Persephone stood as if she knew this was becoming all too much for him, and grabbed his hand, interlacing their fingers.

“My father chose not to continue the name with me. Told me I would be a fresh start, but I

never really understood what he meant.”

“It worked…” Amphitrite whispered and Devon watched as her eyes filled with tears. “It really worked. She would be so proud of us.”

Amphitrite’s hand reached out to take Hera’s and Persephone’s. Persephone kept Devon’s hand in her other one, refusing to release him.

“What did?” Devon said in a slow and impassive tone.

Surprising them all, Hera put her hand to Devon’s shoulder and moved him to sit down in one of the winged back chairs. The Goddesses all moving to sit around him, Persephone closest to him. She continued to hold his hand, stroking over the veins along the back.

Hera and Amphitrite took seats on the floor in front of them. Not seated as Goddesses, but as family and friends.

“We were not the only children of Rhea,” Hera explained, the name of their mother bringing a sadness to her eyes he had never seen before. “We are just the three who survived.” Hera stopped and let that settle in for a moment.

Devon moved his eyes up to hers, his green eyes glowing fiercely as they lit up her face. He reined in his power, his emotions, as his eyes returned to normal.
