Chapter 36

Persephone was losing herself to panic.

She had never lost herself to such emotional turmoil this way. Anxiety seemed like such a foreign concept to her, but the racing heart and tight chest seemed to follow along the lines of what the humans claimed to be an episode of panic.

It made sense she would feel so lost and out of control, not knowing who her enemies were, how they managed to get past her, and what they had planned. She had a clue at their end game, but not the method of which they would use to get there.

Pacing her bedroom, she fought the urge to scream and throw things. Such an odd urge it was to bring attention to oneself and damage their own things through anger. She felt it strongly though, as her hands itched to break something.

Her mind was not a stable place anymore. It was fraught with worry, shame, and fear.

Sitting at the foot of her bed, she found herself exhausted, her pulse slowing as her adrenaline filled episode ran out of steam. Placing her face in her hands, she heaved a heavy sigh, completely unsure of the next step.

Looking up at the window to the Underworld, a sight that used to bring her peace but now only brought anxiety, her hands covered her mouth and her elbows moved to her knees as she tried to think. She needed a plan, one that would help her gain the control she required to obliterate this horrible feeling.

Feeling a pulse of power through the Underworld that announced Devon was back from the mortal realm, she closed her eyes and pushed her hands into her hair as she felt panic rise up again.

She needed to keep this place, and him, safe.

At her wits end with all these thoughts, feelings, and emotional turmoil, she stood back up, pacing again. The feeling of the adrenaline flooding back into her veins, her fists clenching and unclenching in both anger at herself for feeling so out of control, and frustration at not having any answers.

Turning abruptly and without a plan in place, she made for the door to her room. Anxiety the main force driving her in her current state.

How was she feeling all this? Was it solely because of him that now she could feel such raw emotions? Had he somehow made her more human?

It was time to stop thinking and act, she thought.

No more wallowing. She would go to the river and find someone with answers, even if that someone was Minthe.

Minthe. The one person who would gladly stand in between her and Devon. This thought caused another, more powerful emotion to rise to the surface of her psyche. She had never felt it before, but she knew what it was.

Jealousy.

Shaking her head, she chided herself. There was not time for such nonsense.

She turned the knob and flung it open as she walked right into Devon. He caught her as she pitched forward into his arms.

Graceful, Persephone scolded herself.

“Oh, hey…” he greeted, but before he could say anything more, she grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him into her room. Her mouth was on his before the door slammed shut, by whom, she wasn’t sure. The moment their lips connected, she was lost.

His immediate reception to her kiss emboldened her to take it deeper. His hands moved into her hair and he held her head in place while he shared in her enthusiasm.

He must have turned her without her being aware, her back hitting the wall as his hand hitched her leg up and around his hips.

Her eyes shot open, her lips stilling caused his eyes to open as well.

Both of their eyes were lit with Godfire, their colors reflecting on each other’s faces.

“You enjoyed that?” she asked as she tilted her head in question.

His eyes went wide in disbelief.

“Did you not?” he asked, his grip loosening on her as her hands tightened on his shoulders telling him she wouldn’t let him pull away just yet.

“I did. However, I thought perhaps the feeling of anger and irritation would leave after I kissed you, but now I am even more upset.”

Devon looked at her incredulously as he held up his hands and took a step back from her.
