“Let’s unpack that a little. You were mad, so you kissed me to not be mad anymore, but now you are even madder?” He ticked the statements off on his fingers before he dropped his hands to his sides, his entire body on edge.

She rubbed her eyes with the heels of her hands, sighing before looking back up at him.

“I apologize. That is confusing...”

“You think? Also, a little damning to my ego to be honest.”

“I will explain.” She waved him to sit down on the couch, but he stood in the same spot, only crossing his arms across his chest with his eyebrows up as he waited.

She sighed. She had mangled this far worse than she thought.

Emotions were such pesky, confusing things that caused all sorts of trouble.

“I was thinking of how to solve this puzzle of what the Underworld threat might be. Tristan is missing, so I thought of asking you to see if Minthe could find him.” She observed him, though she did not know what she was even looking for in his face. “Then I felt this... anger at the thought of you talking to her, and it was confusing, so I thought maybe if we just kissed and got it over with…”

He moved forward and cupped her face in his hands before lightly kissing her lips, a grin on his face.

“Why are you smiling? Does this make sense?” she asked, baffled.

“Yes, and my ego is well inflated. The damage completely reversed.”

“I’ve never felt jealous before. It is odd, but I can see how it would lead to wars,” she whispered as she stared into his smiling eyes with confusion.

“No need to go to war on my behalf. I am pretty taken with you as well.”

His eyes, beautiful green, focused on her as she basked in his attention.

“Should I decide to start a war, we both know who the victor would be,” she smirked, feeling her body relaxing into his embrace. Such a turnaround from her emotional upheaval moments ago.

He closed his eyes as he pulled her against him, his face in her neck as he chuckled.

“You’ll get used to all these silly emotions soon enough. Annoying as they can be, they make life a lot more interesting.” He whispered against her skin before pulling away to look at her. “So, we can go interrogate Minthe and you can breathe easy knowing that you will be the only one kissing me out of anger after. Side note, perhaps we can kiss without the anger sometime?” He asked as he leaned back further with a cheeky grin and waggled his eyebrows.

Rolling her eyes, she opened a portal to Cocytus, hearing his deep laugh as they were wrapped in shadows.

They had not been there long before Minthe approached them from the river, water dripping off her body, her gills and scales turning back to human flesh

Averting his eyes, he realized she was planning to converse with them nude as she made no attempt to cover herself.

“Hello, Devon,” she purred his name. He closed his eyes and shook his head at her obvious disrespect to both Persephone and him.

Opening his eyes, he kept his gaze on her face, catching the lustful look she held on him for seconds too long. She did nothing to hide the almost frantic and desperate need in them.

How had he missed these warning signs?

He thought back over their time together and realized he had never been around another woman in her presence. She always had him all to herself. After his rebuke of her offer at the gala, he was surprised she was still trying to rekindle their very short-term arrangement.

Shaking his head at her, he hoped she understood the silent message he was sending her.

Nope. Never going to happen.

Her jaw clenched and her eyes narrowed, but she looked away from him to Persephone.

“My Queen,” her voice almost mocking in its tone. It held no reverence for the Queen of the Underworld.

Persephone straightened and held Minthe’s eyes in warning before she spoke.
