“I only found Devon when his soul merged with his latent powers, and that was only after he was killed. How could I know who holds that power if they haven’t yet ascended?” Persephone asked in disbelief.

“Atlas gave you the location. You need to move to find them before another Titan does. Should that person side with them, we would have no hope.”

Only after the promise that she would do just that left her lips did the tension lift from Demeter’s shoulders.

Demeter leaned against Persephone, her head on her shoulder.

“I need you, and our family, to stay safe. I need you to win so that I know everything will be okay for you and our sisters.”

Persephone could only nod, her mind reeling at what her sister was telling her.

She felt a lightness where Demeter’s head had just been and turned to see her sister’s soul fading.

“No! Wait!” Persephone pleaded, trying to pull Demeter into a hug, her arms moving through Demeter.

Demeter stood back with a smile.

“I assume my memories will wane as I return to Elysium. Remember your promise, Persephone,

and that I love you always.”

“I love you, too. So much, Demeter.” Persephone’s eyes glowed as she watched her sister fade away. “I will keep our sister’s safe. Rest, my darling sister.”

Demeter covered her heart with her hands before the Underworld returned her soul home.

Chapter 42

Persephone and Devon intertwined their hands as they strolled through the main street of Halcyon. Market stalls lined both sides of the road and young men moved about to light the gas lanterns just as dusk hit.

She was thankful no one had been lost in the attack on the city. All reports to the Archon had shown structural damage and some injuries, but no lives lost.

That was a reason to celebrate and she was glad to see her city taking time from the repairs to do so.

Devon ground to a stop and pulled Persephone in front of a booth full of jewelry. A young lady not much older than twenty and an older woman stopped unpacking boxes at the sight of them. Devon moved to touch a ring placed in the center of a small silk pillow.

“Our local stone artisan, my husband, makes these. Symbolism in all of them, and especially

strong during the solstice.” The older woman walked to where Devon stood eyeing the ring.

His hand moved over the sapphire stone encircled in little leaves of silver. It reminded her of the sapphires she wore for invisibility compliments of the Cyclops.

“Ah,” the older woman smiled as she took the ring and held it out for Devon to touch. “Wisdom and devotion. A good one for a marriage as you’ll need both.” Without asking, she pulled a matching men’s ring from behind the counter. It held smaller sapphires in between silver vines that wrapped around the ring. A wedding set.

“How much?” he asked as he pulled out his wallet from his back pocket, Persephone’s hand moving to stop him.

“What are you doing?” she whispered.

The woman waved them away and pointed to the soulbond mark on his wrist.

“A gift from the son of Arges to the newly mated rulers of the Underworld.” She smiled as she placed the rings in Devon’s free hand. Persephone pulled in a loud breath and rushed to take the woman’s hand as it drifted from Devon’s.

“He is alive?” Persephone asked the woman in wonder.

The woman smiled and nodded. “Yes, him and his brothers are doing well and have so many wonderful things to say of you and your sister Goddesses. Our family owes you a debt of gratitude for saving them from an unearned sentence in Tartarus.”

“Please, can you ask that he comes to visit me at Cerberus Financial? I would like to speak with him. There are some things we may need help with in the coming days,” she pleaded as Devon looked on.

The woman patted Persephone’s hand, smiling, and nodding in assurance.
