“I do have a business to run during the day, Hera…”

“This takes precedence and you know it. The woman who is always ready to do what must be done is stalling. Have something to confess, darling?” Hera asked, a twinkle coming to her eye that made Persephone freeze for a moment.

Did Thanatos or Hecate tell her of what happened with Devon? No, they wouldn’t… would they?

“Fine. Tomorrow.” Persephone reluctantly agreed.

“Good,” Hera’s dazzling smile of victory crossed her face. “I look forward to seeing it.”

Oh, she bet Hera would.

“What is this place?” Devon asked, moving through the forest. Persephone had woken that morning with a sense of determination and gone directly to Devon’s chambers to commence training again. He hadn’t mentioned the kiss, and the subsequent incident, so she didn’t either. She could hardly look him in the eyes as she’d shadow jumped to the familiar woods.

“The forest below Olympus. Sometimes, when we have issues pulling our power… or

controlling them, this is where my sisters go to get everything put back to rights.”

When she finally entered the large clearing, the same one she’d used to meditate on her

powers through the centuries, she turned to look upon Devon for the first time since their kiss.

Well, the kiss between her and his God persona.

Oh, this was awkward.

He was staring at her, lost in thought, before he cleared his throat and looked away.

Great. He knew.

Damn, Thanatos.

She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose between her thumb and forefinger before she looked back to him.

Hera was right. They needed to resolve his issues pulling his power forward. Leaving it like this would cause a serious imbalance, and the last time there was an unbalanced power structure, there was a war. A mistake they could not afford to repeat.

“The area around Mount Olympus holds the power of all the Gods that ever were. It restores us when we are weakened. It gives us a boost when we are lacking. It gives comfort when we struggle. It will give you the confidence to pull your power forth.”

Devon simply watched as she spoke, his eyes on her lips.

She looked away from him, turning to the lush forest around them. The mountain the Gods had called home since the beginning of time itself.

“Look,” Devon started. Her shoulders tensed, knowing what was coming. “I know… I kissed you… or part of me did…”

She whirled, unable to handle this moment. The embarrassment of this situation was too much.

“It is fine, Devon. It was nothing. Sometimes our powers cause strange things to happen when they are out of control,” she reassured. She smiled at him, but it stiffened as his face seemed to fall at her words.

What had he expected her to say?

She shook herself and turned away again, feeling awkward and uncertain.

Focus on what we are here for, she told herself. We do not have time for this.

“The most important part of this is that you connect with the ancients who rest here. The ones who fell to the long sleep, they can guide those of us who are in power.”

Stepping forward, Persephone put her hands to the ground, letting the power of her ancestors run through her.
