This reaction only widened Hera’s smirk, a smirk that immediately raised his blood pressure.

Him and Hera were going to have words later.

He tried to keep his heart rate under control and come off as unaffected as he took a drink of his somehow unbroken glass of water.

He tried not to listen, but still caught every word.

Persephone’s sisters were also eavesdropping. Though they were hardly being discreet about it. He watched as Amphitrite hid her smile behind her glass while Hera’s face outright glowed at the awkwardness of the situation. They were entertaining themselves at his and Persephone’s expense.

“I really enjoyed our time together the last time I saw you. I am staying here tonight, so I thought perhaps…” Devon caught sight of the man’s hand moving to her thigh under the table as he whispered his invitation into her ear.

The only thing that allowed him to keep that hand was Persephone’s response, as she took his hand and moved it away from her. She placed it back on the table without an ounce of tenderness.

Even at her shunning of the man’s affections, Devon felt his muscles go rigid and a burst of

energy passed through his veins that he had never felt before.

It moved from his head, down the entire length of his body, and seemed to move into the floor at his feet. He did not see any green light, so he assumed he had not physically lit up, but he couldn’t help wondering where that surge of power went.

Persephone moved her other hand to Devon’s in an attempt to send calming energy. This

move was not missed at all by Tristan as his eyes narrowed on her hand covering Devon’s.

She ignored Tristan as her fingers wrapped around his, and in a moment of boldness, he turned his hand and entwined their fingers. Persephone raised her eyebrows but said nothing.

“Oh wow!” A woman bellowed from the balcony, but Devon was watching Tristan’s reaction

and calculating how quick he could stab the man with the steak knife.

Everyone else was too busy watching the drama unfold between the two men to notice what had made the woman shout out with such enthusiasm.

“Tristan, let me introduce you to my date, Devon. Devon, this is Tristan, an old acquaintance.”

Tristan looked unhappy about the introduction but raised his hand for Devon to shake, the snarl on Tristan’s face became an unfriendly smirk.

A small rumble made the room tremble, which captured everyone’s concerned attention.

Everyone but Devon, who focused singularly on Tristan.

Persephone touched Devon’s shoulder as she shot more calming energy into him. He caught

her looking over at Hera with a warning scowl.

Was Hera somehow adding to this influx of his power? Was that what the warning scowl had been for?

He didn’t dare look away from Tristan, determined to be the one to maintain eye contact. He’d deal with Hera later.

A middle-aged woman came over to get Persephone to meet a benefactor. She started to decline, but Devon shook his head.

“Go, I am fine,” he whispered.

She simply stared at him a moment and glanced to her sisters before she nodded in agreement. Standing, she put her hand on his shoulder and left it there. She wasn’t leaving, instead making the other benefactor come to her. All because of him. He felt like a burden right then.

Because of him, she couldn’t rub elbows with the elite. She had to babysit him and make sure he didn’t accidentally burn the building down.

He angled away from Persephone and took Tristan’s outstretched hand, trying not to break

all the bones.
