Before the tree could tear the room apart, she moved quickly and placed her hands on his jaw, ignoring the hiss from the guardian serpent.

She tried to bring his face to hers, get his eyes to see and acknowledge her.

Devon was not there, only the God. She knew she had seconds before Devon was lost for good.

No one could withstand this sort of power and remain. If he did come back, if it went for too long, he would hardly come back sane. Just as the oracles went mad, he would, too.

“Devon…” she whispered as she hoped to see some recognition in his eyes. “Please,” she begged as she ran her thumbs along the sides of his jaw.

After a moment, she caught a small narrowing of his eyes, almost like he could hear her call out to him and was trying to come back to her. She jumped when the serpent on his shoulder nuzzled her hand. She opened her fingers as the serpent lifted its chin to be rubbed, the scales felt so real for something made only of light.

The God controlling him looked at her through Devon’s eyes.

“It’s been too long,” the deep baritone voice of an ancient whispered from Devon’s lips. “He

is strong, but no match for an ancient power.”

“Do not let him perish,” she demanded, unsure of how much power she held against the

ancient.

A deep, rumbling laugh that was not at all like Devon’s left his lips.

“You think to give me orders, young Goddess? A youth born of traitorous loins?”

She let her eyes bleed to black, smoky tendrils coming from the hands still holding his face. Her blue flames engulfed her fingertips as it fought back his green Godfire.

“I think I give you orders as the Goddess of the Underworld. Ruler. One who will damn your soul and drag it to depths of the darkest place in the Underworld should you refuse to release him.”

Devon’s face slid into a crooked smile.

“Good. I’ve been waiting far too long for you. I had hoped time had not diminished the fire in my lovely Goddess,” the ancient whispered. Suddenly, the face in her hands contorted into pain and Devon’s body bowed. She moved her hands to his arms to try to keep him from falling.

The winged serpent let out a loud screech of pain before it pushed her away and moved over Devon. The two of them in parallel states before it seemed to be drawn into Devon, moving along his body before a flash of light brighter than anything she had seen, even Hera’s light, engulfed the room.

She moved her hair out of her face and took in the scene from where she had fallen against the wall after a surge of power had thrown her back.

He was no longer glowing with Godfire and the serpent was gone. She jumped up and moved to look at him as his pupils slowly returned to normal, the green light in them fading. He blinked a few times before he could focus on her.

“Welcome back,” she whispered as she looked him over for any sign of distress. Her relief palpable.

He only stared at her with furrowed brows. The silence heavy in the room, only a slight breeze from outside caused the leaves to flutter from the tree that had overtaken his bedroom. He continued staring at her, his expression giving nothing away. She became uncomfortable and moved to stand up.

Fast as lightening, he grabbed her and pulled her against him, his mouth was on hers with the intensity of a starving man getting a taste of food for the first time.

Caught off guard, she allowed the kiss a moment longer than she meant to, but her hands found his chest and pushed away. His hand at her back held firm, as did the one cupping the back of her head. Not letting her go, he leaned his forehead against hers.

“Don’t worry, it’s me kissing you this time, Goddess,” he whispered against her lips

before placing an affectionate kiss there. She closed her eyes and allowed herself the embrace.

“You’re back. Completely?” she asked, unsure how in control Devon was of the situation. She

moved to look up at him.

His eyes held hers and a genuine smile came to his lips.

“Yes. I am,” he stated with confidence. “But not just me. I…” he trailed off a moment, as if gathering his thoughts. “I am more now and I don’t know how to describe it.”
