She knew then what he was speaking of, as she remembered when she finally released the Goddess inside of her. The moment she stopped fighting and the power that had been deemed hers by the Fates merged to become one with her. She knew how overwhelmed he must feel, and she didn’t want to add to the burden, but she needed to know.

“You…” She licked her lips. “Do you remember?”

The smile reached his eyes in acknowledgement of her question.

He remembered. He should now remember every time throughout history that his soul had seen hers. Devon had the cumulative knowledge of his soul’s entire history.

She hadn’t noticed her hand was shaking until it covered her mouth. Her eyes burned a little

as they started to water. Emotions. She was feeling such joy and relief.

He rolled over her and his hands came to the sides of her face. Memories rushed through her mind of each time she had stood before him.

“My soul,” he started, “has recognized you long before my mind did, but it knew you, and now I do as well. Hundreds of years, our souls waited to join and now they can. Though my soul has been yours for so long, the Devon you know, fell in love with you before he knew what you meant to him. Finally, every part of me is all on the same page.”

This must be what humans felt when they fell in love. This feeling of fluttering in the stomach and zaps of pleasure along the spine at such simple words that held heavy with meaning.

A tear slipped free, running down the side of her face before Devon’s thumb caught it. Something she hadn’t even known she had been waiting for had been handed to her, and the relief was so overwhelming she wasn’t in complete control of herself.

He leaned forward, gently kissing the tears from her cheeks and she closed her eyes, a small sob escaping her lips.

“I took the seeds before I really knew you,” he whispered against her ear, causing the hairs along her neck to stand up. “I will never regret that, and even without being bound to the Underworld, I would always return. For you. Forever and ever, just for you.”

He pulled away to look at her, his eyes lit by Godfire, as if he was making a vow.

Leaning forward, he pressed his lips to hers, and on a half sob, she threw her arms around him to pull him closer.

The kiss moved into an uncontrolled passion she was sure would ignite the castle and burn it all to the ground.

She found she hardly cared at all.

Chapter 28

Devon watched as the people moved along the streets from where he sat with Persephone at the little seaside café in Halcyon. They found a place with outdoor dining and were seated at a quaint little table.

A very date like place, he thought, his mind running through the kiss they had shared.

Their only moment of solace they had up until now.

He had enough of watching Persephone drag herself through every possible scenario and punishing herself almost non-stop over her perceived failures at keeping the Underworld secure.

Refusing to watch her beat herself up any longer, he pulled her from her circle of shame when they returned to the mortal world for work at Cerberus Financial. He had walked into a meeting and demanded she take a lunch break.

She had been using her position there to investigate the deities of the Underworld without their knowledge. No one had heard from Tristan. None of the people the sisters used to monitor Halcyon had heard even a whisper of what could have happened to him. The river deity was now just a lost soul. Another mark against Persephone in her own head.

They had kept guards on Tartarus and were using a spy network that Hera had created long ago to keep an eye on the city.

No matter what they did, Persephone told him she couldn’t shake the feeling that whoever

was working against them was two steps ahead. Their goal focused solely on her father’s release.

Something both of them knew they could not let happen.

He watched her as she looked out over the Thalassian sea and the ships making their way to dock. He felt a tiny bit of pride in himself that he was able to pull her from her stress and bring her a moment of peace.

He took in the city of Halcyon, with the mountains in the background on one side and the sea on the other. The temperature always seemed to be comfortable, the weather fair. He watched as people walked leisurely to and from their destinations. Content in their strides and that they would get to where they needed to be when they got there. The opposite of what he would think the epicenter of the world’s trade and business would be like.

This felt more like an island village sans tourist during the off season. Not that there were many tourist areas anymore. Not like in the history books, when half the world was not a wasteland with sinkholes pulling down everything natural and alive. Something the sisters, being the ones to watch over the sky, sea, and death realm, were still trying to remedy. To bring the world back to what it had been.
