TJ answers, and then someone says something in the distance. “I’ll ride with her,” he says to them. Then to me, “They’re taking her to County Hospital.”

“I’ll meet y’all there.”

Disconnecting, I shove the phone in my pocket and look at the others. “Styxx, go in and tell Samantha that something’s happened and Jos is being transported to County, then call Jamie.”

“You got it.”

Nodding, I start my bike and head for the hospital. My thoughts running a mile a minute thinking about what could have happened, and who could have been trying to take her from me.

* * *

“Tell me again what you saw?” I ask, trying to focus on TJ, who is no more than maybe seventeen or eighteen at the most.

Upon arriving at the hospital, I got there first and was told I couldn’t go with her to the back. Thankfully, Stella’s working today, and she’ll hopefully be the one to take care of Josephine.

As TJ explains everything he saw, I pace the length of the small vending area off to the side of the waiting room. I didn’t want Samantha to hear this. James, her husband, showed up a few minutes ago and was sitting with her. Hell, the waiting room is filled with my brothers and Josephine’s friends.

“The guy was wearing a hat and dark sunglasses. My friends and I saw the accident happen and were heading to help, but the guy drove up, got out, and went about getting her out. Don’t know, but something about the whole thing didn’t sit right, and my friends and me stopped him. He took off running, hightailing it out of there, spinning tires.”

“You know what his build was? Color?” Tombstone asks, crossing his arms.

“Built like you.” TJ nods at Tombstone. “Dude had a dark tan.”

“Appreciate you helpin’ Jos,” I remark, holding my hand out. “Anything you ever need, just give me a call.”

“You’ve got a club marker, kid, if you ever need it.” Reaper grunts, also shaking the kid’s hand. “If you’re ever looking to join the club, come by.”

“Thanks,” TJ says and shakes his head. “But you don’t owe me anything. I didn’t do anything someone else wouldn’t do.”

“Kid, you were there and stepped in when you didn’t think something was right,” Angel mutters, getting TJ’s attention. “You did good and when we say you have our marker, it’s not something we give lightly.”

TJ opens his mouth again to speak, but someone calls out, “Family of Josephine Sexton.”

Spinning on my heel, I step to the front next to James, Samantha, and Jamie.

“How is she?” James asks.

“We’re pumping her stomach right now,” the doctor answers, looking annoyed. “Your daughter took something, and we don’t know what it is. She was really out of it.”

“My daughter wouldn’t have taken anything,” Samantha bites out snidely. “She’s not a junkie.”

“Ma’am, your daughter is lucky she isn’t dead right now from an overdose,” the doctor sighs.

“I know my daughter, she wouldn’t have taken anything. I was with her before she left,” she argues.

“What if she didn’t know she’d taken something?” I speak up before the doctor can throw his bullshit out again and piss us all off.

“It’s a possibility, but without knowing what she ate last, I can’t say for sure.” He shrugs.

Sneering, I step forward. “How about you get your ass back there and ask Dr. Stella Blackwell to take over,” I suggest and turn to Styxx, “Do me a favor, go get that box of chocolates. We’ll give it to Stella, and she can find out what was given to my woman.”

CHAPTER14

UNKNOWN

No! No! No!

This isn’t how it was supposed to happen. She’s supposed to be with me. Those damn kids just couldn’t mind their business. Now I’ll have to find another way to get her. She was ripe for the taking when I started to pull her from the car. It was just my luck she’d leave the salon.
