God, this girl unmoors me.

“Call Dr. Singh. He’s one of the best anesthesiologists there. He told me last week he’s coming back from his cruise on Friday, so he might not have anything lined up yet. Anything else? Okay. Bye.”

Ending the call with the OR nurse, I leave my phone on the counter and sit down across from Andrea.

“Any plans for today?” I ask her, shoving a forkful of omelets.

“It’s still raining.”

“Yeah, but I checked outside and it’s not as bad as yesterday. We can grab raincoats and umbrellas and walk around if you’re bored of being cooped up here.”

We know what we’re doing. Waiting for the other to open up about what happened earlier. Someone has to.

“Listen, Andrea.”

She cuts me off. “We don’t have to talk about it.”

“We do.”

“Nope. We can just pretend it didn’t happen.”

“Why would I want to do that? It’s no secret I like you. And based on how you respond to me, I know you like me too.”

She groans and covers her face with her hands. “I don’t behave like this normally, okay? I need you to understand that.”

“I know. Why? Did you think I do this on the regular, too?”

Finally, she lifts her head and raises an eyebrow. “You probably have hundreds of women lining up.”

I can’t help but laugh at the jealousy coming off her. “Lining up, yes. Ask me how many I’ve brought here.”

“No,” she shakes her head wildly, hair falling on her face.

“Ask me.”

“Ugh. I hate you. Fine. How many did you bring here?”

“Only one.”

“I don’t wanna hear anymore.”

“My housekeeper, Gina.”

She chuckles, gets up, and shoves me on the shoulder. “You’re an ass.”

“Sorry. I couldn’t resist.”

ANDREA

It’s a fun, lighthearted breakfast, and I don’t remember laughing this much.

After cleaning up, we head out to the spacious deck, but just as we’re about to leave—raincoats, umbrellas, and all—the wind picks up, turning my umbrella inside out. The wind whips across the beach, gusts carrying swirling grains of sand.

The waves also make it too dangerous to swim, even if the rain isn’t as heavy as last night. It crashes against the shore with a thunderous roar, rising and falling in towering swells.

Dark clouds continue to loom overhead, stretching across the horizon. Oh well, I guess a walk on the beach or a quick swim is out of the question.
