Chad watched.

Then they celebrated.

Chad was happy with their tried and tested formula.

He didn’t need to get physically involved with the killing.

But when he thought of Romeo’s smile, and heard his cheerful whistling in his head…

“Not bad for your first try.”

Chad blinked himself back to the present and turned to Josh. “Huh?”

“Zombie slaying.” Josh stretched out his arms. “I better be going. I didn’t get much sleep last night … if you know what I mean.”

“I think I can guess.”

“The handcuffs were Olivia’s idea.”

“I didn’t ask, and I didn’t want to know.”

Josh rammed his shoulder into Chad’s. “Don’t knock being handcuffed until you’ve tried it.”

The grin spreading Josh’s lips began to falter, and the light in his eyes faded. Chad knew the exact moment he stopped seeing Chad as Chad, and looked at him likethevictim. One that was handcuffed repeatedly by Romeo and couldn’t escape.

“Shit—”

“Don’t,” Chad whispered. “You’ve said nothing wrong.”

“I was insensitive.”

“You weren’t. You were just talking to me like a … like a friend.”

Josh tilted his head. “There’s no likeabout it. We are friends.”

“Yeah, we are.”

Josh slumped into the sofa. He poked Chad’s thigh. “Thought any more about Gary?”

“Gary? Oh. No. I haven’t.”

“Aww, come on Chad, you want him. I saw that look on your face.”

Chad got to his feet. “Didn’t you say you were going?”

Josh laughed and stood up, too. “Yeah, yeah. You can keep the console.”

“What?”

“You’ve been suspended, might as well spend your time doing something constructive.”

“I don’t think killing zombies is constructive, besides … what about you?”

“This is the X. I have the Y at home.”

Chad held out his hands. “Is that supposed to mean something to me?”

“It’s the old model, and you need the practice.”
