“You said I wasn’t bad.”

Josh grimaced. “I didn’t say you were good, though.”

Chad followed him out of the living room.

“Wait, here’s a game more suited to you.” Josh fished his hand in his pocket and pulled out a yo-yo.

“Is that Shawn’s?”

Josh nodded. “I forgot to give it back to him.”

He dropped the yo-yo in Chad’s hand. “Don’t hurt yourself.”

Chad stopped at the front door to watch Josh get in his car.

“Josh!”

He looked over. “What is it?”

“Thanks for … coming by.”

Josh winked and shut his door. He beeped the horn five times, yelled goodbye out the window three, and then drove away down the dirt track.

“Who’s Gary?”

Chad startled and slammed the door shut. “Fuck… Romeo.”

He spun around and found Romeo in the doorway to the kitchen. “How long have you been downstairs?”

“Answer the question.”

“What question?”

Romeo took in a deep breath. “This … Gary you want. Who is he?”

“Oh.” Chad snorted. “You heard Josh—”

Romeo took a step closer. “Who is he?”

“I’ll show you,” Chad replied, squeezing past Romeo to get to the kitchen.

“Show me?”

Chad yanked open the drawer full of clutter and found the folded-up leaflet. He handed it to Romeo, who after a hesitation, snatched it from Chad’s hand.

Romeo deflated. “Gary’s a dog?”

“Josh thought I was lonely here in my haunted house, and suggested I get a companion.”

“Our house isn’t haunted.”

“The magpies aren’t exactly welcoming.”

Romeo stared at the photo of Gary. “You want a dog?”

“He would help with the magpie problem.”

“We don’t have a magpie problem.”
