“Why’s that lucky?”

“Not as many flies … and maggots. Not to mention the smell’s not as bad.”

Chad disagreed, but didn’t say anything. The smell had slapped him in the face when he first opened his car door.

One of the machines droning in the background clunked. Chad stopped at the sound of cursing, and Keith promptly swore in reply and changed direction. “One of the tracks has come off. Keep going. Fifty more yards.”

Chad’s gaze lingered on a battered sofa. The seagulls were picking at the cushions gutting the stuffing out of a hole in the middle. “Right…”

“You’ll be fine. Throw them a few scraps and they’ll be your best friends.”

Keith wandered away, hollering back at the voices.

“I don’t have any scraps,” Chad mumbled. He scrambled to get his buzzing phone from his pocket and hurried past the frustrated seagulls.

“Why the hundreds of missed calls?” Ally asked.

“I’ve got a lead.”

“Chad, you’ve been suspended.”

He gasped at a low-flying seagull and ended up on his hands and knees in some kind of sludge. Chad wiped his phone on his chest, grimacing at the muck on his clothes. He held the phone gingerly by his face.

“Where are you?” Ally asked.

“Comberton Recycling Center.”

“What?”

Chad pressed the dirty phone to his ear. “I said, Comberton Recycling Center.”

He got up and brushed his dirty hand down his pants. “I’m gonna need ten showers at least when I get home.”

“You’re at the landfill sorting site?”

“Yes. I think I’ve worked out where the killer got all the chloroform from.”

“I’m listening.”

“Clarksons—

“The superstore?”

“Yeah, the one Olivia Jones is turning into her nightclub. You said it was an old store, and the appliances were ancient.”

“What’s your point?”

“Chloroform was used as a refrigerant in large freezers up until 2004. That’s where our killer has been getting the chloroform from, and to get it from the freezers, he must’ve touched them. He might have left some evidence and that’s not all…”

“I’m listening.”

“The killer is using the car to kill his victims.”

“We already know he’s killing them inside the car—”

“No, Ally. He’s rigged the car. The heating. The fan. It blows out chloroform. That’s why Justin’s and Damian’s hands were inflamed. They’re the closest source to the chloroform.”

“You think they were warming their hands?”
