Romeo glanced at the shower. “No more than ten seconds.” He looked back at Chad, his rage gave way to sadness. “The longest ten seconds of my life.”

Chad reached for his bicep and squeezed. “I’m okay.”

“You were fine, then your legs went, and you were limp. I caught you under the armpits and got you out. The second I knew you were unconscious, I stopped. I swear it.”

“I believe you,” Chad whispered.

Romeo slumped and pressed his wet forehead to Chad’s. “Even though I could feel your heart beating and your breath on the side of my face, it still scared the hell out of me.”

“You stopped.” Chad shot him a weak smile. “That’s what matters.”

“Of course I stopped. You were unconscious.”

“Not what I meant.” Chad sighed.

He struggled upright, tucked his knees to his chest, and rested his forehead against them. Romeo scooted closer and ran his hand up and down Chad’s back.

“Aren’t you…”

Chad lifted his head when Romeo didn’t say any more. “Aren’t I…?”

“Scared? Concerned? Angry?Something.”

“Cold,” Chad replied. He gestured to the towels hanging up.

Romeo leapt to his feet to get one, then wrapped it around Chad so tightly he could barely breathe.

“I know the risks of … that kind of thing. I trust you.”

“You shouldn’t.”

Chad rolled his eyes out of Romeo’s view.

“I don’t trustmewith you.”

“It excites you.”

“Yes,” Romeo whispered, “But if one day I do it too hard, or for too long, it won’t be worth that excitement.”

“I’m okay, Romeo.” He huffed. “The same way you love how you can excite me, I love how I can excite you. I love you getting rough with me when you want to keep me still, and how dark and wide your eyes go, like you want to drink it all in. I know the risks.”

“Imightkill you.”

“And I’m okay with that.”

“I’m sure as hell not.”

Chad smirked. “I know, but if you do … you do.”

“How can you be so relaxed about this?”

“Because I’m broken.” He shrugged. “And if you were to kill me, I wouldn’t want you to wallow in guilt, I’d want you to hurry up and join me.”

His attempt at injecting some humor failed. Romeo squeezed his eyes shut and crushed Chad in a hug.

“I’m okay, Romeo.” Chad whispered.

Romeo helped Chad up from the floor and steadied him when he swayed.
