“Does … does it hurt?”

“I said I’m fine.”

“No, I mean,whenI’m choking you.”

Chad shook his head. “My throat feels tight, and I get lightheaded and heavy, and your touch feels intense. It all feels really good.” He stroked Romeo’s cheek. “I’m not afraid. It doesn’t scare me. I like it, Romeo, so quit feeling bad about it because you shouldn’t. Besides…”

“Besides?”

“The last thing I felt was your come down my leg,” Chad pressed his lips to Romeo’s mouth and murmured against him, “so Iknowyou like it, too.”

Chapter Sixteen

“Head. On. Thigh,” Romeo commanded, pulling Chad’s head down.

He huffed and gave up arguing against him. Chad flopped onto his side and found himself covered in a blanket with fingers raking through his hair within seconds.

A day had passed since the shower incident, but it still seemed raw in Romeo’s mind. He became Chad’s overbearing shadow, and his lingering concern that Chad might drop dead at any moment had taken on a smothering quality.

Romeo paused as he touched the scratches hidden by Chad’s hairline. “How did you get these?”

“Oh. I did it when I thought I’d got Josh killed.”

Chad sighed when Romeo started picking his hair apart, searching for the offending marks so he could see them as well as feel them. “I don’t like you hurting yourself.”

“I’m fine … and it’s not like I did it on purpose, it just kind of … happened.”

Romeo grunted in disapproval and resumed stroking Chad’s hair.

“You can talk to me.”

“I know,” Chad whispered. “And I would’ve, but I was at work, and it’s not like I can call you when there are people around.”

“They won’t know who’s on the other end of the phone.”

“It’s too risky. Besides, if I called you up and said I was freaking out over possibly killing Josh, what would you say?”

“I’d tell you to stop freaking out.”

Chad waited for more, but Romeo jostled him and grunted, “what?”

“Nothing.”

Romeo sighed. “I’d say I’d have the hole ready before you got home.”

Chad’s laugh tapered off into a groan. “Jesus, Romeo.”

“Is that not a good enough response?”

“If Josh died, I’d be distraught, and if it was my fault, I’d be inconsolable. Telling me you’ve got a grave ready would not make me feel any better.”

“You’re not distraught about the people in our field.”

“They’re bad people.”

“So they deserve to die?”

Chad attempted to struggle upright, but Romeo pinned him by the shoulder. “More so than a good person.”
