“You’ve completely lost me now.”

Josh stretched out his neck and rubbed his newly done tattoo. One arm was dedicated to a computer game character. “Sonya. I tagged her in a post—”

“What did the post say?” Chad asked.

“Oh, it was just about how much I was in love with her, and that I wish she was real.”

“And what did she say back?”

“That she was real…”

Ally shook her head. “I can’t believe you’re a detective.”

Josh shrunk back and shrugged. “It made my day.”

“A fictional character claiming she was real made your day?”

“Yeah. I’ve been playing that video game since I was fifteen. I think Sonya was my first proper crush. No girlfriend has compared.”

“This gets sadder and sadder,” Ally said.

“She’s like my hero.” Josh frowned. “No. Sheismy hero.”

Ally flashed a glance a Chad. “And the sadness level has peaked.”

“That’s because you don’t have a hero.”

“I do. Two words. Jack. Daniels.”

“Yeah, well, that makes sense.”

“Cheeky bastard.”

Chad raised his hands, playing peacemaker. “Let’s calm it down—”

“If this Sarah character asked you to jump off a cliff, would you do it?”

“Her name is Sonya.” Josh folded his arms. “And yes, I probably would. You have to do that on one of the levels, and everything works out. I trust her.”

“You trust a fictional character?”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“I’m done,” Ally said. “Chad, take over.”

“So soon?”

“Yes. There’s only so much ofthatI can handle. I need to zone him out.”

Chad smiled and looked at Josh through the mirror. “Come on then, you’ve got to show me. Otherwise, I’ll never know if you’re making it up or not.”

Josh tugged out his phone and handed it over. Chad wrinkled his nose up at the picture ofSonya, wearing very little, sprawled out on a mountaintop surrounded by snow. She had massive purple eyes, a minuscule nose, and pouty red lips. “All the pictures and you picked that one?”

“She looks hot.”

“She looks cold.”

Josh took the phone back. “Well, that’ll be the snow.”
