“Christ.” Ally hissed through her teeth. “You know what, I prefer murder speculation to this.”

“You don’t have anything to share from your day off?” Chad asked.

Ally drummed her fingers against the steering wheel. “I made a very good casserole if I do say so myself.”

Josh stifled a laugh on the backseat.Chad tried not to gag.

“I didn’t think it would taste nice, considering the ingredients.”

“Which were?” Chad asked.

“Chicken, carrots, pickled onions, and olives.”

“That sounds…” He hummed and turned to the window.

“It was lovely,” Ally said. “And I’ll bring in a Tupperware box of some for you to try tomorrow.”

“That won’t be necessary.”

“I don’t care if it’s necessary or not, it’s happening and you will eat it, and you will tell me it was enjoyable.”

Josh shoved the back of Chad’s seat. “Come on, your turn.”

“My turn.”

“What did you do on your day off?”

Chad looked across the darkened fields.

On his day off, he flashed his ID badge and collected a killer.

He brought Graham back to the outhouse and read extracts from his diary until he broke down and confessed to killing his wife, and her sister.

Then Romeo killed him.

He’d held him up by the throat and left his feet dangling in the air. The memory was both grotesque and impressive.

Chad swallowed as he thought of Romeo’s back muscles tightening, stretching, pulling under his show of strength.

Then he shuddered at the memory of Romeo leaving him to stew with his conflictions for too long. Oneemotion still felt raw and unsettling. It had bubbled up from the pit of his stomach, and grew fiercer as Romeo ignored him.

“Chad!”

“Huh?” He turned back to Ally. “Yeah?”

“What did you do yesterday?”

“I just,” he lifted one of his shoulders and dropped it again, “relaxed.”

“Relaxed?” Josh asked. “Is that your word for jerked off?”

The car swerved. “What the hell, Josh?” Ally barked.

“Just asking.”

“I slept. Ate. Watched some TV.” Chad answered.

“How depressing. Kinda wish you did jerk off.”
