Chad fought against his instincts to turn and run from an angry Romeo and rooted his feet to the floor. He cast a glance at their new kitchen décor, the starstruck lovers, Romeo had called it before pressing his lips together in a firm line. Chad offered to get rid of the painting, but Romeo insisted it be on the wall, but didn’t tell Chad anything about it.

“Found them.” Romeo grunted, holding up a pack of antiseptic wipes.

The wounds were small and insignificant. They no longer stung with the adrenaline flooding Chad’s system at Romeo’s anger, but when he dabbed at the wounds with more force than necessary, the pain came back with a sharp sting.

“Romeo,” Chad whispered.

“What?”

He swallowed the lump in his throat. “You’re hurting me.”

Romeo stopped. His touch became gentle. “Sorry. I…”

His voice trailed off. A pressing silence lingered between them as he cleaned Chad’s head. He huffed when he was satisfied and flung the wipe in the bin. Romeo looked at the painting on the wall for a long time before turning back to Chad.

“I have nightmares,” Romeo said.

“About what?” Chad whispered.

Romeo didn’t answer. Chad leaned back, but didn’t get a chance to ask again, Romeo’s mouth was on his and he felt the desperation in the kiss. He felt that Romeo needed it, so he let the question go unanswered, and matched Romeo’s need with his own.

They pulled apart. Romeo panted against Chad’s lips. “Are you sure you don’t remember anything?”

“Only a voice.”

“Whose voice?”

“Vincent Whitehall’s.”

Romeo took a step back. “What does he say?”

“He’ll poison my life if I break my promise to him.”

“The promise to visit him?”

Chad nodded.

“It’s not happening.”

“You’re sounding like Ally.”

“That’s one thing me and her agree on. You’re not going to Wiltknot. Vincent can play his mind games with someone else.” Romeo spun around to face the window. He whispered to the magpies. “It can’t be that hard…”

“What can’t?”

“Breaking into Wiltknot. I got out of prison, surely, I can get into one.”

“Easily.”

Romeo spun around. “How?”

“You announce to the world you’re still alive and get arrested. That’s how you get in back in prison.”

“Hisprison.” Romeo cracked his knuckles. “I’d love to wrap my hands around his scrawny neck.”

“Why?”

“He’s tormenting my magpie in his sleep.” Romeo replied. He brushed his fingers through Chad’s hair. “And that makes the monster very mad.”
