“I don’t remember any more than his voice, and I feel okay now. I think it’s bothering you more than it’s bothering me.”

“You dug your fingers into your scalp.”

Chad grimaced as Romeo ran his fingers over the wounds.

“I’d say whatever you were dreaming about was definitely bothering you at the time.” Romeo shook his head. “And I’m angry with myself for lying there next to you, not realizing you needed my help.”

“You woke me up.”

“Eventually … but how long were you lying beside me in despair before I noticed?”

“It’s not your fault. You can’t protect me in my dreams.”

“I should be able to protect you anywhere.”

Chad moved to the sink and washed his hands until his nails were clean. The magpies were swirling outside, clucking at each other while they waited for Romeo to appear and feed them. Beyond them, the sun rose, making the dew on the field sparkle.

Romeo hovered beside him, fiddling with something in his hands.

Chad glanced at him. “What’s that?”

Romeo turned the leaflet around and Chad smiled at Gary’s big grey eyes.

“I gave the number a call.”

Chad widened his eyes.“You what?”

“Relax. I didn’t announce I was Romeo Knight… I asked if Gary was still available.”

“And?”

“He is.”

Chad raised his eyebrow. “And?”

Romeo shrugged. “Maybe you want to visit him.”

“And why would I do that?”

“To see if you like him.”

Chad withheld a smirk. “And if I do?”

Romeo rocked forward and back on his feet. “You might be able to convince me to keep him.”

“You want a dog?”

Romeo screwed up his face. “I don’twanta dog.”

Chad glanced out the window. “It would help with the magpie problem.”

“There is no magpie problem.”

“Maybe he could catch them, and we could have ourselves a magpie pie.”

“You eat my magpies, I’ll eat your dog.”

Chad smiled and turned to him. “Are you serious?”
