“About eating your dog?”

“About bringing him home?”

“You like dogs.”

“Yes, but it’ll need both of us to look after him. You’ve got to want him, too.”

“It’ll be … interesting to have a dog.”

“Interesting?”

“Yes. I’ve been thinking about it since you showed me the leaflet. They’re supposed to be good company.”

“Better than the magpies, that’s for sure.”

“The name Gary has to go, though. I’m not having a dog named Gary.”

“Agreed. I’ve got the perfect name for him anyway.”

Chad slipped his hands over Romeo’s shoulders and hung off his neck.

“Which is?” Romeo asked, embracing him back.

“Mercutio.”

“Mercutio?

“But Merc for short.”

“You do know he dies in Romeo and Juliet, right?”

“I know, but he was Romeo’s best friend. Man’s best friend,Romeo’sbest friend, means you’re gonna love each other.”

Romeo inspected the top of Chad’s head one last time before pulling him close. “You still need to convince me…”

“And how do I do that?”

“We start in the bedroom.”

Chad laughed and buried himself in Romeo’s chest. He stiffened at the chattering behind him.

The magpies grew louder, more impatient. He jolted into Romeo when one pecked at the window.

“Easy.” Romeo soothed. “They’re just hungry.”

Chad breathed against Romeo’s heart. “How many are out there?”

Romeo hummed, before replying with a somber, “Five.”
