“I know they can’t see us, but it freaks me out every time,” Josh whispered.

Pete smirked, then started stroking his hair, perfecting his Elvis quiff.

Chad lowered his shoulders. “Still want that bacon sandwich?”

“Always.”

Chapter Six

Chad closed the front door and shouted a hello into the house.

Romeo didn’t answer, nor did he reveal himself from the kitchen.

Chad backed out of the door.

The outhouse acted as Romeo’s lair. Flat-pack furniture and puzzles scattered on tables had once filled the huge space to distract from Romeo’s frustrations. He no longer needed to build and break, but he did still enjoy his puzzles and his gym in the corner. His latest obsession was languages. French, Spanish, Italian. He learned them all at the same time to stave off his boredom. He even had online tutoring with the camera on the laptop permanently covered.

Chad stepped inside, but apart from the desk, chairs, and whiteboard on wheels, the space was empty.

If he wasn’t in the house, or the outhouse, that left one more place.

Chad held his breath. He could hear them, the chitter and chatter of the magpies in the field. Romeo clucked at them, and they clucked back. His fondness for the birds didn’t extend to Chad.

He shuddered, eyeing the whiteboard.

His mouth popped open.

Two men stared back at him, but they weren’t from the cold cases Chad had given him.

Justin Fen and Damian Hunt watched Chad approach.

He pressed his hand against Damian’s face and found the page still warm from the printer.

Brown hair. Brown eyes. A similar build.

Chad shook his head.

Ally was wrong.

They didn’t look like him.

The magpies stopped bickering in the field.

Chad sensed Romeo coming up behind him before he heard him.

He tugged Chad back into his chest and pressed his hands over his eyes.

“Seven letters, dishonorable player.”

Humor laced his tone. Despite the ludicrous situation, Chad still smiled. “I’m not a cheater.”

Romeo didn’t remove his hands. “You’re spying on my work.”

“I was looking for you.”

“You knew exactly where I was.”

“What is this?”
