He shrugged. “Old wounds being picked at.”

Keeley gave him a blank look.

“This is confidential, right?”

“Of course.”

“The case I’m working on … there’s a link to Romeo, and it’s thrown me.”

“What kind of link?”

“The killer’s tagged the victim’s bodies with Romeo’s name.”

Keeley leaned back in her seat.

“And I don’t know whether it’s some hero worship towards him, or whether it’s aimed at me.”

“For what purpose?”

“To unsettle me.”

“That’s a lot of effort to go to.”

Chad frowned. “What do you mean?”

“If the goal was to unsettle you, there are far easier ways, but this …personis killing in the name of Romeo Knight, why go to all of that trouble if they merely wanted to unsettle you?”

It was Chad’s turn to look blank.

“What I’m trying to say is this case isn’t your fault. You’ve got no reason to feel guilty.”

“I don’t.”

“Really? You’re questioning whether this killer is acting because he wants to unsettle you, and you don’t feel guilty.”

Chad lowered his gaze back to his coffee. “It’s more likely to be hero worship over Romeo.”

“Maybe that is what is unsettling you.”

“Explain.”

“The hero worship over a monster. Marc Wilson was inspired by Romeo, and this new killer could be, too, and that bothers you.”

Chad nodded. “It does.”

“I doubt that documentary has helped matters.”

“Have you watched it?”

Keeley shook her head. “And I’m not planning to.”

Chad resumed staring at his coffee.

“Romeo shouldn’t be glorified.” Keeley said. “No one should kill full stop, but killing in his name adds to the insult. They want to please a dead killer. Honor him. I understand why that would upset you.”

“It’s not just that... I think he’d like it.” Chad’s throat tightened. “I mean, I don’t know for sure, but that’s my gut feeling. If Romeo Knight was alive, he’d like someone killing for him. It would … please him. He liked the idea of a copy-cat until Marc kidnapped me and put me in danger.”

Keeley peered at him for a long moment. “Romeo Knight wasn’t concerned over your safety, only his reputation being sullied by Marc Wilson. He didn’t go after Marc to save you.”
