“Statistically, you’re more likely to be murdered by someone you know than a stranger.”

“Someone who knows both Justin and Damian.”

“Which doesn’t narrow it down as much as you think. They’re linked by The Desperado and the place is always heaving. Speaking of heaving but in the vomiting sense, how was your session with the shrink?”

Chad snorted. “Keeley, you mean. It was okay.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Wow, only took two years … you’re so lucky you’re not being charged for that. I barely had enough for three sessions, but there’s you, getting them for free.”

“I can pay for more for you if you want, call it your birthday present. It’s a big number this year, right? Is it 60 no wait, 70? 80 even?”

“You’re an asshole.”

“I take after my sergeant.”

Chapter Seven

“How about I take the jewelry shop and bookies, you can take the pet shop and art place, then we meet back at the cafe?”

Chad nodded at Josh’s request and set his sights on the pet shop. Froggies Friends. He ran his eyes over the adverts pinned in the window before settling on the opening times. He frowned, then pushed inside. The bell dinged, signaling the woman to put down her phone and look up.

“I’m detective Chad Fuller.” He held up his ID, but she didn’t look towards it.

She gaped wide enough for Chad to spot the piece of chewing gum in her mouth.

“We’re going door to door seeing if we can—”

“I don’t know anything.”

“Right…”

“I never go to The Desperado, the pet shop closes long before it opens and I don’t know either of the victims.”

“Okay. That answers my questions before I even asked them … do you mind if I look around?”

“Why? I’m not hiding anything.”

Chad gestured to an aisle. “I’m going to start here.”

She shook her head, then nodded, then shook it again. Chad deemed it as a go-ahead and strolled down one of the aisles. He paused at the animals. Gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters. The usual kind of pets. One of the cages had been boarded up with cardboard, but the label was still there.

Rabbit.

The woman’s beady eyes were on him, and he turned to see her gnawing her lip.

“There was nothing I could’ve done.”

“Huh?”

“The rabbit.”

Chad sighed. “I’m not here about the rabbit.”

He stopped by the dog beds, and squeezed one before shaking his head and inwardly questioning himself about why he felt the need to test one of the beds.
