“Understood.”

The DI hung up before Chad could say anything else. He glanced at Romeo still crouched over the lower half of his body. “Did you hear that?”

“I heard.”

“The killer’s made a mistake.”

“The question is how long until he realizes?”

Chad shrugged. “We won’t release anything about Tate to the press before we know he’s safe.” He struggled out from beneath Romeo and swung his legs off the bed. “Any luck, this case will be wrapped up by sunrise.”

“Unless he dies before he tells you anything.”

“Yeah, well. I’m choosing to be optimistic. The DI said Tate is in a stable condition.”

Chad headed into the bathroom to get ready, expecting Romeo to be curled up in bed when he returned, but he was still in the same pose, frowning at the headboard.

“What is it?” Chad asked.

“Why didn’t he wait?”

“Or she,” Chad replied while buttoning his shirt.

Romeo collapsed onto his side and propped his head up with his hand. “Orshe.A few more days and it’s The Desperado’s villain night, the perfect cover, but instead, they try to claim someone on a Tuesday. A Tuesday?”

Chad rolled his eyes. “Do serial killers prefer certain days of the week?”

“I imagine if you look at the statistics you’d find out.”

“He could be an opportunist killer. Tate happened to be there at the wrong time.” Chad put on his tie. “Maybe his need to kill is too hard to ignore.”

Romeo hummed. “I thought that too, but it doesn’t add up. Desperate to kill but distant about it with his method?”

Chad shoved on his pants. “There could be something the victims know that our killer wants to be kept quiet. Not everyone kills for the thrill of it.”

“Ourkiller?” Romeo raised his eyebrow.

“Don’t get excited. It’s a figure of speech.”

“If there is something the victims know, you better hope you hurry your ass up and get to the hospital in time, because if it was me,” Romeo grabbed one of the pillows, and pressed it into the mattress. “I’d make sure he wouldn’t be able to tell you anything.”

Chad leaned over the bed, gave Romeo a quick kiss on the mouth, and left to wait for Ally outside.

“Josh is in the back,” she warned as he climbed in the car.

Josh stuck his head between the seats. “Why did you tell him?”

“To stop him from having a heart attack.”

“We’re on the way to the hospital. If you’re going to have a heart attack, it’s the best time.”

Ally pushed Josh’s head out of sight while muttering curses under her breath.

“Any news?” Chad asked.

“Tate’s in his own hospital room receiving oxygen. He’s still unconscious. There are uniformed officers on the door making sure no one can get to him.” Ally’s mouth twisted into a smile. “We’ve got the killer by the balls.”

“Ever heard the expression not to count your eggs before they’ve hatched.”
